Cave used to mean the world to me...Round about up to Lazarus, around Lazarus he started gyrating his groin to the Glastonbury girls and I was less interested. Then he started making Shirte records as well. Last one I bought was that oversized black one that doesn't sit in the collection nicely with the other children. Cave probably thinks that this is great...hey how wild out there is it to have a misfit - Well, it's not wild out there at all if you made it mis fit.
He meant so much to me from Berlin 1989 to Coventry 1998 - and now - well - nope..
But he's playing Blackpool tonight. I live near Blackpool. I like Blackpool. If a hero plays Blackpool I generally make the effort..and tonight I'm not doing..I feel right mixed...in part...You go you're way, I'll go mine, and in part...Rock history in the missing.
Feels right weird to have Cave at the back door and not even motion towards it.

I still get that vibe sometimes and am no fan of all the extra baggage and crap he puts his name to but the one thing that keeps me coming back is the shows - there's something about how they translate live that means I can go back to the newer albums an appreciate them in a different way. I do think he should drop the Bad Seeds name though. They're not the Bad Seeds any more

The last 3 albums are stunning.
I'm guessing you mean the studio work? I played the white one last night with Suzy on the cover and half liked it. (PUsh the Sky) I like the threat of gangster doom in that first song. It's a powerful thing. I was and still kind of am tempted to get the greatest hits album for the juxtapositioning of the songs. And for the cover, it's quite a Barney Bubbles post punk art piece. I've not played Sketelton Tree since it's first play on buying it. Ghost, I just listened to on youtube and let it pass by....Good to hear them spoken of as masterpieces. I'm sure that they are...they - well HE just doesn't get to me these days. And then there's modern vinyl quality..man why does All the Worlds a Stage still sound like gold and autumn after being hammered to deeeth from 1976 and Cave's Push The Sky is all fuzzy already?

hmmmm...I like this as well. I did want to go to his arena shows. He (and his Bad Seeds) have been astonishing through the years in those Manchseter Academy type places. I was pleased for him that he'd made it to the arenas and I did want to see how well he'd cope with them. I'm sure he'd make them very serene. I went to the cinema and saw that recent movie and it was just all that I hate about pop stars. All that posturing. he's a writer not a sex symbol. I'm a bit kicking myself for not going to the Opera House last night, and also feeling...well, It's a bit like a kid having to let go of a teddy bear cos he's growing up hahah...Thing is, I don't feel this way about Rush or Gillan or Witchfynder General etc etc Not Wayne Hussey or Eldritch or Bob...Just Cave. And yeah, I think the Bad Seeds were redundant around about Boatman's Call no? It was around this point that Nick no longer needed Mick to orchestrate his songs. He'd learnt to do it himself by this point.

I saw the the big O2 show for Skeleton Key, 20k seats sounded ridiculous when they announced the date. Anyway, got there early enough to get a decent spot v close to the stage and he was good despite pulling a few of his 'new' moves - he went into the crowd and climbed up a side bit to sing a verse from there. That was OK, if only because being physically pushed out of the way by Nick was a new experience for me. He also invited about 50 people up to sit on the stage which I always think is tiresome whoever does it. But it never felt like he wasn't 100% into what he was doing, he is still very good at it and that goes a long way.
Carnage is a brilliant record. IMHO, he's getting better all the time. Continues to push the envelope instead of sticking with the same old thing. No danger yet of turning into a nostalgia act, playing basically only festivals like another band I could mention. Decorum prevents me from naming them, haha. Hopefully said band will change that trajectory soon!
Spinning Song Bright Horses Night Raid Carnage White Elephant Ghosteen Lavender Fields Waiting for You I Need You Cosmic Dancer God Is In The House Hand of God Shattered Ground Galleon Ship Leviathan Balcony Man Hollywood Henry Lee Into My Arms Ghosteen Speaks
This was pretty much a stripped down version of the Bad Seeds show that was cancelled.
Very different to a Bad Seeds performance though - Nick genuinely playing with Warren, lots of improvisation, lots of trying to trip each other up for a laugh too.
Balcony Man almost collapsed due to some unwisely encouraged audience participation, White Elephant and Hand Of God still had all the old fire.
I'd honestly rather see hum like this than doing stuff under the Bad Seeds banner which does feel a bit tired now.

(I missed Thomas though!)
Interesting that Nick is about the same age as Robert Smith. Definitely different career trajectories at this point. Part of the reason I'm anxious to see what Robert has come up for a new record. I wish this tour would come to the states. We're not quite there yet as far as COVID goes. I'm really into Nick's current run of records. Yes they're different but that doesn't mean bad. Warren Ellis is a remarkable musician.

Nick occupies a pretty unique space now, there's something compulsive about his personality and his work rate that wasn't there in the same way when I started listening to him. He's very focused and can turn it off and on at will. On the other hand, he needs cue cards for nearly everything onstage, he's performing rather thn inhabiting the songs like he used to.
I was watching some old amateur filmed stuff from the Let Love In tour and, age aside, the Nick who would launch into the air and land on his knees howling about the devil is a distant memory and those songs are unlikely to ever get heard again, which is a shame. If you look at his crowd now, a lot of them would never have seen or even know about ramshackle, junkie Nick and that fearsome band he had.
Also, the merch stand was selling knitted Nick Cave jumpers for £300.
