I'm kind of surprised there's not a a Nick Cave thread here already. He certainly has some goth creds! Also, I got a lot of good comments on my Bad Seed shirt @ the Cure show in Vegas. Anyway, I'm a long time fan. 1 of the most intense live performers out there & the recorded output is all pretty much worthy. Posting due to the release yesterday of "Skeleton Tree". The record is an absolute stunner. Much of it is dealing with the death of Nick's 15 year old son last summer, so this is harrowing stuff & may not be for everyone. It's a powerful emotional experience on a par with "Never Be the Same". The music is very chill & different. Sonically, the record is recorded very sparse. Lot of lovely space in it. Nick's main henchman Warren Ellis contributes a real lot. That guy is kind of a mad genius, IMHO. If you're a fan, take the ride. It may be scary but the journey is well worth taking.
I'm a massive Bad Seeds fan - it's increasingly a love/hate thing though. I liked a lot of his last album and he's always been decent live but his self-financing model does mean he produces a lot of extraneous stuff outside of the music.
I have listened to the new album 2-3 times now, I'm still digesting it. There is a disappointing lack of Bad Seeds so far though, it's 90% Nick and Warren. I don't dislike it but I seem to be in the minority of not thinking its an instant classic. It certainly wouldn't be in my top 5 Bad Seed albums and at the moment I couldn't single out an individual song as exceptional.

sums up my thoughts pretty much after listening to it once yesterday... saw him live a couple of times, and the best concert for me was when blixa bargeld was still playing with them, just a different chemistry. i love many of their albums, but really disliked his film 20,000 days on earth. most of the time it was just too pretentious for me, almost ruined my liking of his music for quite a while. i felt like 'never meet your idols...'
until now only one song from the new album stands out for me "i need you", but more as a best among the others, rather than an absolute favourite of mine i will always return to again.

The Birthday Party were superb & I liked the Grinderman stuff, but find his other work decidedly average.
I agree for albums released after the 1990. However for me From Her to Eternity (1984), The Firstborn Is Dead (1985), Kicking Against the Pricks (1986), Your Funeral... My Trial (1986) and Tender Prey (1988) are really excellent. Excellent also the period live bootlegs.

You don't like Henry's dream? That's my favourite! Nocturama was the first album I didn't like and that first tour without Blixa was pretty disappointing. He's had decent albums since then though and is always decent live. And Mick is great with Polly's band, really fits in nicely.
UK and Euro tour dates announced. London date is confirmed as the 20000 seater O2 - I think Nick and I are reaching point of irreconcilable differences How can he choose that venue (at least 4 times bigger than any indoor London venue he's ever headlined) for his latest material which is just so minimal?
Yup, I just seen the tour announcement. Gonna be the first Cave tour I've missed in God Knows how many years but not cos of the venue size for me czuczu...I get that they've been gaining popularity for years now and they can't keep on playing the theatres. I just feel flat. It's like something's over, a massive something, a part of my life and I won't be going to the gigs this year...maybe in a few years time I'll get back there, maybe not.
I saw the last album tour a couple of times and it did grow on me but I just dont feel it in the same way these days. No Mick, no Blixa, no blood and thunder.. Theres just a lot of other stuff I'd rather see or listen to now. I still hope he can come up with something that blows me away one day!
New best of compilation in a cavalcade of deluxe and super deluxe formats. I've got my remasters so am happy to give this a pass!
actually the deluxe & super deluxe versions look pretty nice. prices aren't bad for that sort of thing. very interested in the dvd. i'll probably to take the dive & get the deluxe one even though i am a bit bummed he is not playing seattle this go around.
