Best Charlotte Sometimes live version is Sydney 1981
It s great yes, but I prefer Paris 1992 and versions from the wish tour. in fact, I collect Live versions of Charlotte Sometimes, I love this song live so much 😍 It made me fall in love with the band

It's nice because it was approached differently on every single tour pretty much, what do you think of the '89 versions?

I like them sure, but i've always find them less "envelopping", less "warm" than in 1992.
To me 1989 versions have less character than let's say 1984, 1981 (or 1992).
I have not been disapointed by the most recent versions live, i think they still play it great but it's true i miss this 92 vibe with fat synthetisers ;-)
This song show after show is the holy grail i am looking for...but unfortunately, i haven't heard it for a big while now...Maybe someday

Some songs sounded bad on specific tours. Like Why Can't I Be You in '92, really dreary compared to before... i'm not sure if it got better or worse later.
The Wish tour had the worst interpretations of many songs IMO, but it's just a question of taste...

It is... but yeah I do think it's true that a few of the hits were delivered with a little less passion overall. Then again some people call '96 a travesty in comparison, others not at all. Speaking of the Wish tour though, I remember reading a review by someone in Australia. He was a musician himself and enjoyed the show enough but couldn't believe that the keyboards sounded like a child programmed them. A bit harsh I suspect... certainly doesn't apply for Charlotte!
I just recently found out that Charlotte Sometimes was changed live from the way it was originally, around 84 or so. The changed version sounds less strange than the original, and IMO it takes a bit away from the song.
Disintegration, as much as I love it, sounds much better on record. Especially the more recent live versions lack all the power and dynamics of the studio version. And it bugs e that Robert can never get the lyrics right.
Love Cats is another one that doesn't really work live.
On the other hand, I prefer the live version of Charlotte Sometimes, especially from The Top tour and the 1986 RAH version is also great.
There aren't many Cure songs that make me cringe but Screw is one of them.
Disintegration hasn't worked live for many years as a slow sludge. Same goes for Primary. When they slowed it down, it lost its urgency and just dragged.
I'm not going to say that they don't work live but for the upcoming dates I hope that Boys Don't Cry or Why Can't I Be You won't be ending the shows again.

I agree. Those have been hammered into the ground as closers.

I thought Doubt didn't work live, definitely too different from the album version for me. But maybe because it was never played live until Reflections so I didn't "get used to" live versions so different to the album version.
I AM glad they played it live tho! Might go listen to the Faith set now, or later after smashing out the last two eps of Raised by Wolves tonight! Yay.
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!

It’s a big shame they never played ‘Doubt’ live on the Faith tour. I love ‘Doubt’.

Well… he did the best he could. I think it’s weak. It lacks the youth angst needed for a song like this, IMHO. Also, Roger with a tambourine doesn’t help at all.
For me, a couple of songs that they have done live (very little) and sounded worse than on the album are Labyrinth and Trap.
I also think that The Lovecats live doesn't do justice to the brilliance of the song.
Then there are a few songs that they never really do live probably because they'd require additional instruments, like strings or saxophone etc, such as:
- Icing Sugar (fantastic song, btw) - Gone! (underrated, in my view)
They also play To Wish Impossible Things very rarely. And in fairness, it's best in the album version, with the viola in it. Although I do like it on 'Show' too.
