Decent setlist - I think the US has done slightly better with variation and rarities than Europe for the post-00s long haul tours.
Very few of the keyboard parts adapted by Porl are actually that bad but Catch is such an odd choice - would you stay and listen or run to the bar and hide?
2008.06.08 Austin Music Hall, Austin, TX (AU - atxwolfattack) FLAC. I don't what it was about this Austin Texas show. Others have called it the "Wonder Show" for 2008. Maybe their host there had an eclectic playlist request. Whatever, this is the 2008 4Tour show the rest of us would have been happy to hear: They had Alt.End, Torture, The Figurehead, The Big Hand, Catch, Signal to Noise, the Hanging Garden, and Fire in Cairo.
From a very quick listen, to my deaf old ears, out of the three versions of this I have (aleal5687, atxwolfattack & J.D.) the atxwolfattack is the best.
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!
I listened to two more shows this weekend. Some sour notes, and some magical plays of things like Inbetween Days. with the 2008 tour, some tracks are better than others...
Watching "Picture Show" tonight. The old VHS thing representing the post-"Staring at the Sea" era of the band. Hard to think of the Disintegration era as "new" now, right? And weird how they show so much from "Kiss Me Kiss Me", yet cut off Plainsong before Robert starts speaking. Fascination Street is so sexy, what a time. You'd almost think Robert Smith was "The Crow" from that time.
Listened to "The Cure - 2008-03-05, Valencia, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (Spain) 'MTV Winter' (Incomplete)". This was a weird one with only 9 tracks like Inbetween Days, Plainsong, Freakshow, and From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea.
Having better luck with "2008-03-08 Pavilhão Atlântico, Lisboa, [Ziggyswoon][FLAC]". Some static through the concert, but this minidisc show was from the heart so I'm giving a listen to on this Sunday night.
They really jumped around the world. Only three months before they came to Florida for my shows.
Something about those Bercy shows. Enjoying 2008-03-12 Paris POPB [FBZ] Bercy Palais Omnisport, early Monday morning.
At least The End of the World always gets played correctly on this tour...
To Wish Impossible Things seems to be a mainstay of 2008, as if Robert wanted to make amends for ignoring the title track of the 1992 album. I wonder as to our modern culture's need of reductionism and simplifying things. Would it have hurt album sales if this had been named "To Wish Impossible Things?"
Now onto The Cure - 2008-03-18 - Rotterdam, Netherlands [FLAC] REMASTER. Always happy to hear a Dutch show. This is their practiced "4Tour" setlist, so no surprises for the most part.
I think a lot of 2008 attendees were like me. We weren't holding out hopes this would be a sensational tour, sort of like a pop machine of hits that Robert Smith swore The Cure would never devolve into.
But having acknowledged that, there's a lot to smile about with these 2008 shows. Especially when compared to 2020 shows!
Listening to Freakshow from 2008-10-11 - Rome (Italien). Did this chart anywhere?
I now think of the 2008 "new tracks" as a private experience for Cure fans. It was just something between us and the band. Not like when singles were released from Kiss Me or Disintegration, where they were a global experience. No, Freakshow is just something between those guys on the stage and us. Like a relative performing in your living room. Good job! Now let's have a beverage.
It's been a long time, but Robert just closed the main setlist by saying "That was 4:13 Dream". So they played the whole new album for the Rome audience:

Yes Freakshow was one of three number 1 singles from 4:13 Dream. Shame they'll probably be the last ever singles releases from the band but I guess you can't get better than having number 1 singles at the end of your recording career.
