I thought I would start a thread on the fact that I am finally listening through my entire Cure bootleg concert collection, chronologically.
My collection spans 1979-2014, all in MP3 format, many of which I converted myself. Sorry FLAC fans, but I can't hear the difference and did not have the storage to keep the originals downloaded from CCC and other places.
169 gigabytes of Cure Concerts. I didn't try to organize them until a few months ago. I eliminated duplicate shows and unified the names, noting which ones were alternate source versions. All so I could listen to them in the order the Cure played them in.
The 1979 shows are a miracle, who would tape an unknown band. I enjoyed hearing Do the Hansa on these early shows. Another Day contains hints of greatness, themes and sounds that would make the next few albums into masterpieces. As it is, it's unfinished brilliance at this early stage.
I'm halfway through the 1980 shows right now, enjoying the 'Rennes - L'Espace (France) (28.10.1980)' show. The band seemed to like playing forthcoming material like Play for Today and the very early rendition of Primary. But older like Another Day shine. I love hearing Another Journey by Train as the segue from Jumping Someone Else's Train. I had first heard Another Journey on the Join the Dots official 4-disc set that I bought when it came out. How neat that people got to hear it live all through the early eighties.
Great to hear Robert explaining through this tour that A Forest is their new single in England. No one wants to hear that new song, play your first album again!
Playing through 1980 is exciting to me, as 1981 is almost my favorite touring year to listen to. We're getting a few samples of that glorious time already, with early plays of All Cats are Grey.
How neat to hear the encore on this show of Do You Wanna Touch. Written by Gary Glitter, I heard this song performed live by Joan Jett a few years ago. Robert and Joan perform it exactly the same, eerie! The band sounds so tight and focused in 1980, it's hard to believe these are teenagers drugged out of their minds. They held it together for their fans, from the sound of it.
Anyway, I am supposed to be studying for my final exams in Biology and Chemistry. But I will be studying with The Cure as we move through my collection. Again and again and again...
