I'd agree that to call the 86 shows a "greatest hits" tour is a bit off the mark. I'll still fall back on the fact Boris had not been long in the band & Lol was still being propped up by Porl on keyboard duties, so they would have had to be quite strict with the sets & play what all members had learnt & what was possible. In 95/96, they were in the fortunate position to have a very accomplished keyboardist in Roger & so it was easier to vary the sets. As for the Want/ Plainsong point, if I was in the band, I would have started to get a bit fed up with opening with the same song for an entire tour & would have tried to mix it up a bit. They still went into Want after Plainsong, so double opener really. Win win The only shows they really "shook up" that tour were Inglewood & Paris.
Well, I'm glad I got to hear them in 2008 and 2013. Bands with a lot thinner setlists are on greatest hits tours now, and The Cure could just tour off any of their eighties albums and we'd be happy to throw our feet.
And yes, I love Plainsong to death, but who wouldn't want to change the opener after playing it the whole tour...

The downfall happened around the self titled album when the songs from that album got quickly dropped from setlists, that's when the rot set in. Same with the 4-got album tour, they did one show when they played the whole of 4:13 then the songs got dropped fast. Personally I don't understand that as there are a lot of good songs on the album and the beautiful Underneath The Stars should have been the opening song for all the gigs since the album.
I hate to see them become the dinosaur rock band relying on past glories, when they should be concentrating on releasing a stellar new album. I know they got at least two great songs for it (please come home/boy I never knew)
The problem is that the band only released two albums in the 23 last years that were well received. Moreover, the two last albums were flops commercialy and I don't think the band are fond of these two albums too. Hard to have enough confidence in your songwriting and release a new album in these conditions.
I am curious (see what I did there) to see AForestFan's trek through 87.
When I started putting my live collection together, 1987 was poorly represented. But the fans were really active taping the infrequent shows that year, so I have a good sampling.
I have eight different takes on the Santa Barbara show (Kiss Me Deadly version, Australian Silver version, etc). The two nights of Buenos Aires, thanks to this board. Lots of German, Italian, French, and Italian shows. Seems like a great year. (Except for the London 12-17-1997 show, looks like a bit of mislabeling that i have to fix...)

If you want a band that's playing The Cure's albums from the eighties, I know a good band that are playing
I, personally, think The Cure are on a downward spiral and can't get out of it ... hmmm I should write songs for U2, anyway, whilst I like the repackaged "Deluxe" releases, they are hardly a step forward. Everybody is hoping for the other half of 4.13, for me that's just another step backwards, if that material wasn't good enough then why is it now?? Renny summed it up perfectly in Hammersmith, he said "Nathaniel you're a forking lovely bloke", sorry wrong quote, Renny called The Cure, "Status Cure", at the moment that is sadly very apt! If there is nothing new to release I hope they stop touring, knock together something new or, give up.
I thought 4:13 was pretty bad, and would not be interested in hearing the other tracks which Robert considers even more depressing. I didn't love the 2004 band reboot, but it seems to have been the best new material that we've gotten since Disintegration.
Still, doldrums for The Cure is far better than the output of others. I put together a playlist of Flock of Seagulls, and darned if I couldn't find more than 5 tracks I liked. The Cure has plenty of life left as a touring band, and the same goes for this tour review...
Finishing out the 1986 tour with 25.04.1986 London - Royal Albert Hall (England). Robert notes they're going to play Other Voices like it's ancient history. Which I guess it would be by 1986. In a short time, this track would be part of the Staring at the Sea CD compilation. Just another hit single with the others to new listeners like me. My CD of this was like one of the first CD pressings in my town. It had sat at the record store unsold until 1990 when I bought it along with Mixed Up. But that's another story.
1986 06 14 - Nürburg - Nürburgring (Germany) 'Rock am Ring Festival' [R.B.], Dallas 19 07 1986 and Minneapolis 16.07.1986 are actually the last shows in my selection today, but I can't think of anything to say about them.
1. Herford 31.5.1980 (two versions of a_forest) 2. Wembley, London, 9.12.1987 - fantastic setlist - no comment 3. Paris 7.2.1982 - hypnotic to paralyse (can´t explain better) 4. Prague 21.2. 2008 - they give us all what they can...... 5. Kiel 24.11.1996
Forest
Prague 2008 was good, but the 2000 Tour topped that. Both Want and JLH came as a surprise and I am not talking about the Faith at the end.
I absolutely LOVE listening to the 1981 Picture Tour... It puts me in a very zen state of mind. My favorite show from the whole tour has to be Coventry 11.30.1981.
Thanks for this - I'm trawling through the stuff over there now and i appreciate this recommendation - can we have a new thread of recommendations?
I just taped the Oxford 84 gig - very good - great gig, great quality but then I see that the New York gig included 'Secrets' - wow! so recommendations would be real nice...I'm now taping the Manchester '85 gig - not recommended so far - all a bit washy and whistley and circular. But it's a gig I should have been at and a venue that i love and is notorious for it's great sound so is the reason why I plucked Manchester from this tour - any '85 recommendations? any any year recommendations?
