My First Listen Through: The Cure Live 1979-2022

I seem to recall Burn being played... A friend of mine, who is not familiar with The Cure beyond their top-40 singles, said they should play that song from The Crow. Just days before the actual New Orleans show. Weird coincidence, or just because they were in the Big Easy...?

Just listened to 1982-04-27 Apollo Theatre, Manchester England. This was an audience recording of what officially was released as the 'Hanging Garden EP'. Wish they would release that entire soundboard as an official show. The audience recording starts out bad, with The Figurehead playing at the wrong speed. But the rest of the audience recording sounds fine. This would have been considered a pop hits setlist, for 1982.

Killing an Arab never had a finer version than this from the original lineup.

That's cool. I'm so uninvolved at shows (except the 2008 Sunrise/Ft. Lauderdale show) that I don't even raise my hands when Robert says to during From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea.

I'm not sure if this is the place to make an announcement, but this thread is auto-biographical about my state of mind, so this is as good a place as any.

Since 1993, tracks like A Forest have been my personal theme songs, because I personally identified with the lyrics of this track. Despite earnest efforts, I always felt like I was lost in a forest, all alone, and unable to find a connection with the right girl.

That's all changed, as I got engaged on September 26th. My fiancee and I will be married the first week of December, if all goes right.

This is a momentous event, as for anyone, but I've never been married and actually thought I was going to end up a male version of an old maid.

Being engaged, this now calls into question my devotion to The Cure. Which tracks do I personally identify with now? A Forest and The Figurehead no longer describe my perpetually-depressed state of mind. Do I fit this band, mentally? Is this over?

Fortunately, there are a lot of peppy, happy songs that Robert Smith and the rest of the band played through. The Cure is multi-faceted. I have been slowly introducing my fiancee to the happier side of The Cure, tracks like Lovesong, The Same Deep Water as You, and A Night Like This. Or, at least these songs make me happy, even if that was not the intended effect.

Plus, I have yet to dance with her on songs like Why Can't I Be You?, Catch, Close to Me, The Lovecats, and so on.

I've enjoyed the lighter, loving side of The Cure for decades now. But I never truly felt the happiness that Robert doubtless has from finding his soulmate in high school and sticking with her through thick and thin. Now I have that shot at happiness, and rather than taking comfort in the darkness of the Cure, perhaps I can find new meaning in love songs I only mouthed the words to, but never felt. comeonyoureds

My better half is not a fan, she puts up with them, our old "band" did reform and play Lovesong at the wedding reception - nobody left the room! Whether I'm happy or sad, Charlotte Sometimes will remain my favourite song. It is a myth, you do not have to be a manic depressive to like The Cure, amidst all the Pornography the pop songs emerged proving ................ I don't know!

Nice sentiments, thank you!! I'm currently spending the weekend with the 1982 tour, so not the happiest time in the lives of The Cure. But there are bright spots along with the dreary songs. And the darkness is inviting, as always...
