Today we’re in the former capital of The Kingdom Of The Goths, Toulouse.
Founded by Bauhaus in 1979, who endured a tense power struggle with Specimen in the early 80’s, the city gave rise to many exponents of the sub-culture with break out acts such as Siouxsie & The Banshees, Alien Sex Fiend, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cult & even The Cure to name but a few. Although many of them today have distanced themselves from the Goth tag to the extent that the current Kingdom Of The Goths is now Whitby where there is a burgeoning market for glow sticks, vintage motorcycle goggles, hideous furry boots & respirators to service the current Cybergoth clientele.
With the Goths seemingly deserting the place, Toulouse had to think on its feet in an attempt to define its identity & after a wholly unsuccessful (& painfully un-funny) stint on the comedy circuit it started getting desperate. They didn’t have a moment Toulouse!
Along came a small airplane company called European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company NV who changed not only the fortunes of the city, but also the shape of the commercial airline industry after numerous failures with something called Airbus. So catchy was the name that the airplane makers even adopted it for themselves as it was way easier to spell on the letterheads & business cards.
Soon celebrities opted to be born in this now incredibly successful place. Camille from Emily In Paris being one of the more high profile ones. But not quite as esteemed as legendary police sergeant with a defective pop-out lighter Francios Duval.
That’s the culture &, indeed, sub-culture covered and so it remains to be said that we wish our intrepid travellers fatrabbit , bloodflowers78 , olivier & maccatori a truly wonderful evening at the Zénith after availing themselves of cassoulet & a few Carorals.
Seems we’re back to mustard & ketchup for this one, so bring your own burgers & hot dogs
