It’s the first night of the tour & the first time The Cure have played in Latvia.
Destination Riga Arena.
There are a few theories as to how Latvia’s capital city got its name. It could be from Riege, the German name for one of the Daugva tributaries, but the most likely is that it’s a colloquial reference to the award-winning, iconic turntable manufacturer that sparked the vinyl renaissance we see as commonplace nowadays.
It’s a city with a rich history from being a Viking trade centre in the middle ages, until the christians came along and started fighting all the pagans and stealing their festivals, all the way through to being the no-holds-barred stag/ hen party weekend capital of Europe.
In 2014 it was named European Capital of Culture thanks to it’s classic automobile shows & high quality beer bikes.
Searching for famous Latvians led me to none other than the legend that is Marie N who handed the Baltic state their first (& only) Eurovision win in 2002 with the classic I Wanna….ay yayayayaya…..
This evening’s show will be in the world famous Ice Hockey stadium, so warm clothes and sensible shoes will be a must. The Arena has previously hosted such giants of contemporary music as Mumiy Troll & Ringo Star and his All-Star band (although nobody has a clue who any of them are. Except Ringo who everyone knows is the voice of Thomas The Tank Engine) & The Cure will add their own sonic footprint to this venue.
andy , maccatori , pillowman , ruegi , & Gita will be in attendance today after they have enjoyed a nice colourful bowl of Aukstā Zupa followed by Pelēkie Zirņi ar Speķi all washed down with several bottles of Kvass. Who knows? They may also partake of a cheeky Melnais Balzāms. So priekā and have a superb time at the show.
Inkeeping with “tradition” I thought it’d be nice to give the setlists a bit of colour this tour. So we’ll be going with the colours of the city of Riga.. or as near as dammit. Just don’t all start quoting pantone numbers at me please.
