Thank you for your kind words! I was definitely foolish, but you know I learnt a lot from that experience. Yes I'd definitely love to return one day.
Do you take your son travelling??
Yes! We took him to Germany at 6 months, Canada at 1 year (he got super sick, which was very scary), London at 2 years, and Scotland at 3 years. Since we've been saving for a down payment on a new apartment for the last 3+ years, we haven't traveled abroad since then. Since travel has been such a big part of our lives, that has been really hard. We HAVE to get out of the country some time in the next year or we will go mad.
I find it so fantastic that he’s already so well travelled! Is there anywhere specific you’d like to take him? I’m so sorry he fell Ill in Canada ! May I ask where you were when this happened ?
I’m with you, travelling is such a huge part of my life! I’ve been big hooked on it since my time in France when I was 16. In a way, I’m always half searching for a place I’d like to call ‘home’, I definitely don’t feel settled.
where are you off to next ? Perhaps we should make a point of travelling to Europe and meet up! I definitely have some ideas in mind! 😀
I second taking kids with you abroad as early as possible. Our son has had his passport since he was 3 years old. He has been to Greece, Croatia, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, England, Ireland... I'm sure I'm missing some others.
One of the greatest gifts we've given him is his love of travel. That worldliness has served him well in every aspect of his life... from comfort in (literal and figurative) foreign situations at a young age to college application topics, and on and on.

It’s so amazing that you’ve taken your child to so many different countries! And even better that it’s helped him grow academically and personally. My father hated going anywhere, but on occasion we’d get to visit a mall or two in the great state of North Dakota!
Now that your son is away at school, what do you and the wife have planned ? I recall us chatting about Greek island hopping...!!!!

Growing up I had traveled all over the eastern U.S., but never outside the country until I turned 30.
As far as plans for our quasi-empty nest situation... We had planned to go to Australia this past January, but the wildfires nixed that. (Remember when that was going to be the defining story of 2020?! How quaint.) No overseas plans at this point. We've been dreaming of travel, but haven't set out to make definitive plans yet at this point. Seems like we'd be setting ourselves up for disappointment.
My wife and I were supposed to go to NYC in September for the New Order/Pet Shop Boys concert and some Broadway shows, and my wife + both our boys were supposed to go to California in October for my 50th. All of those plans have been scrapped. We kept our NO/PSB tickets for their rescheduled September 2021 show. That's really all we have at this point, and I'm just super focused on that rescheduled trip. I miss that city so much.
Oh, and yes... I LOVE Santorini. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Ugh - I too am dreaming about going away, but haven’t booked anything quite yet to avoid any potential disappointment. I have a very good idea of where I’ll go, but part of me is holding out for The Cure to release some tour dates.
I do hope you get to see NO and TPSB, it would be so much fun!
Ahhh Greece! I cannot believe I was there a year ago, with all the changes I the world, it feels like a lifetime ago !
Even though we can’t exactly travel right now, I’m grateful that I have such nice co-workers who invite me out to their cottages. I haven’t lived here very long and haven’t made many friends yet, so it’s really nice to be included in their weekend plans! I mean it’s not quite the same thing as going abroad, we all have such a great time and we get to escape the city!
I keep wanting to post something but not having the time to find old photos, argh!
I spent a month in China back in 2001 which was a massive culture shock but incredible. Shanghai - Suzhou - Wuhan - Chongquin (by boat, along the Yangtse) - Hong Kong and then back to Shanghai.
Sometime after that, I went to Malaysia - different parts of Borneo. That was mainly snakes/spiders (boo!) and Orang Utans (yay!). Spectacular seafood
More recently, we did a partial lap of Sri Lanka by car - mainly for the National Parks and wildlife but there are some very cool places to be discovered there
Sri Lanka was our alternative to Kenya and Tanzania - cheaper and much less dangerous for tourists It does still have the caste system though which is a downer every time you encounter it.
Only been to Agadir in Morocco. Beach, sports bars and packs of wild dogs. Meh!
The 2 trolls have stopped us travelling much further than the Med for the last few years. But, cabin fever has led to us planning to nip across to Paris for a few days as soon as feasible.
czuczu - thank you for sharing your experiences! Your trip to a China sounds good especially fab!
Did you stay at an all-inclusive resort in Morocco ? I’ve never stayed at one personally, but people here during the winter, flock to those types of places in Mexico and the Caribbean in droves. My favourite places in Morocco were Marrakesh and Ouarzazate. I’d definitely go back in a heartbeat.
My former partner used to work for an major airline and we could have flown virtually for free to tons of destinations throughout the world, but he only wanted to visit places in NA! I mean I definitely did enjoy the Florida Keys, but there are so many other places to see and so many other things to do! Now that’s what I call I wasted opportunity.
We were staying on a ship, en route from Madeira to the Canaries. Agadir is pretty under-developed as a destination - it's basically a deep water freight port that is moving into tourism. Beach is stunning but that's about it. There's very little to see or do if you're not a sun-seeker (I'm not - I'm a city nightbird!).

Are there any cities you’re particularly fond of ? My absolute hands-down favourite is Prague followed closely by Krakow (Berlin is up there as well). In Canada, Montreal wins by a landslide.

My other half lived in Canada for a year - massive Toronto fan. I had to bring a box of Tim Hortons's back from the Cure Glasgow gig last year..
Easiest is Amsterdam, great everything - gig venues, pancake houses and museums. If we get the 7am flight then we're in Jordaan by 10am
Barca is our go-to escape destination, skip the Rambla and stay in the gothic quarter. Never run out of things to do or cool places to chill.
Marseille is way more fun than snooty old Paris.
Copenhagen is the winner for winter stuff, forking cold but the kids are old enough to go to Tivoli now which will blow their minds Winter train trips in Germany are always cool, especially heading down south through the snowy woods.
Further North, Bergen gets the thumbs up - tiny but v pretty in Summer.

I’m rather envious of how close you live to mainland Europe! I think if I lived there I’d spend my time (and all my money) travelling around. Silly ancestors just had to immigrate...
Toronto, eh? Hmm I have some pretty strong opinions on that city, but I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it! I’ll admit that the food scene is pretty great there, best I’ve ever experienced in terms of variety actually, so it gets my vote on that aspect.

We're 10 mins taxi from an international airport, it is pretty easy compared to back in the day when it was all buses and ferries
I didn't get to spend a year in Canada, just her - in fact her first night back in the UK was the same day I got home from Paris and we met up again in a pub after not seeing each other for years. Keep planning a trip to US but other things keep getting in the way... Did make it to Havana a few years back, I imagine that's completely unrecognisable already.
