My BF went to get some basic essentials he always gets every Friday and the grocery stores are stripped of everything. It's crazy.
People just don't understand what is being asked of them. Was at the grocery store the other day and anything with the name Lysol, Clorox, or Purell on the label was nowhere to be found. Toilet paper shelves were also completely bare. People were buying gallon jugs of water by the half-dozen. I'm baffled by the "end of the world" mentality of the people we're sharing the planet with. Seems everyone is concerned with stockpiling food and water, but not about doing the things that can really make a difference right now to protect themselves and those around us (maintaining distance between others, washing your hands properly, etc.).
I think I am finally "getting" that social distancing isn't about losing your freedom, lol. Nobody is being rounded up and carted off. People are mostly just choosing to stay away from businesses, subways, appointments, etc.
I'm super conservative when it comes to this sort of thing, but a large part of me wishes they'd go ahead and close the schools here. The only thing is, there is such a high % of homeless and hungry children here (and one million in the school system), not to mention the parents living paycheck-to-paycheck with no means of finding childcare while they work. No paid time off, etc. This is what has happened in our country, and now it's apparent why, hey, NOT providing employees with benefits, a living wage or, very simply, basic health care, is coming back to bite us in the a$$. I can only imagine other countries are shaking their heads at how we "take care" of our own here. We're so far behind the curve.
If it does come down to closing the schools, I'd like to offer someone who can't take off work a bit of child minding since our own kid would be home, too. But I digress...
The hoarding just baffles me. I can feel when I go into the grocery store the mental pull of, "Hey, everyone else is stockpiling food - there will be scarcity!" But fortunately, my non-reptile brain has prevailed. It's not as if we will not be allowed to buy groceries, and if taken sick there are tons of delivery options. Feast or famine, I guess.
We have plenty of beer and dried beans. That's all that matters.
As of Monday, all arrivals into New Zealand will have to self-isolate for two weeks and no cruise ships are allowed to dock here. I think it's the right decision but it's a financial disaster for those of us who rely on tourists for their income. I do believe it's for the best though and things will work themselves out. Very strange times indeed.

Social distancing is in full effect here in Norway now - which makes my situation of my workplace closing down really interesting... (By law we need to have a meeting with our employers, who works (and therefore lives) in a different part of the country, so we'll see how that goes...)
But if you want a laugh, here's some Norwegian politicians/officials, including the prime minister, at the end of a press conference regarding the virus :
I love Sci-Fi movies, and if one day there was a 'real' problem (comet strike, nuclear war, really lethal virus), people are so selfish and unprepared and not respecting the rules we'd be in a real mess...

I'd like to think that it would be exactly the opposite, and the best from every one of us would come up to the surface.
