Seems Germany is going to full lockdown & Italy looks set to follow. Sending hugs to our German & Italian contingent here. Not the best news you want at this time of the year
Need to vent about the state of public education here. After it became apparent our mayor's promise a few weeks ago that students would be able to attend school 5 days per week rang hollow, I have been emailing and calling legislators. Usually, I get no response. In one instance I was told that our family has it better than so many. Doesn't that sound like something a manipulator or abuser might say?
This is still largely a feminist issue for me. I have clearly told Mr. K I am done being a 1950's housewife since having our son learning at home for so much of the time means it is very difficult for me to return to work more. I am no longer struggling with our son to make sure he completes all his lessons at home. It isn't my job, and nobody ever asked me if I was willing to take it on; the understanding was implicit given the fact I'm female. I'm done. It's not my responsibility and I'm not superwoman. Things only change when people say they're done playing the game.
That sounds like a real drain @notkristie. Can Mr K at least take some of this off your hands? I have a feeling that all the measures (or half measures) were made in such a hurry that no-one really considered social implications alongside the fact it's the 21st century. Moreover, I suspect, for the most part, the measures & rules were put in place by men. Hang in there & stick to your guns.

Thanks so much, steve. It is one of those cases where I know everyone is suffering, and I know we are lucky in so many ways, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable for our elected officials to turn a blind eye to their responsibilities and the promises they've made to us. Why can't we look to other countries who have successfully opened primary schools? Oh yeah, that's right. We've completely gutted educational funding. I forgot. Our schools were already overcrowded to bursting before all this.
Mr. K can't realistically take some of it off my hands due to his workload, but we have agreed to hire progeny's babysitter (whom we haven't seen since the beginning of the pandemic and is studying early childhood education in college) for four hours per week to help with some home teaching. That way, I can feel more able to focus on expanding my business to my new office without feeling I am neglecting our son's education. It's something I am grateful for, but as someone who strongly believes in paying every cent of my taxes to ensure public infrastructure, it makes me a it bitter. I also like to be 100% self sufficient, so admitting I can't do it all is a blow.
I'm pretty outraged right now. New mutant version of the virus in the UK is apparently 70% more infectious. New restrictions now in force which will fcuk up xmas for millions. I am seriously worried for my mum & dad & step mum who has dementia. WTAF is going on?

Wow, I had not read or heard anything about this. That's pretty alarming. Oh, cr@p. And it was already very infectious. I honestly can't even really imagine that.
I'm hearing a bunch of European countries already suspended air and other forms of travel from the UK. For several it kicks in tonight. Like trains for Belgium or ferries for ireland. I heard about NL yesterday and was like 'wait, aren't you guys already in lockdown anyway?'

The UK discovered a mutation to the virus that is ~70% more infectious & Europe really could do without it spreading there. What is more concerning is that the UK reported this variant to the WHO in September & yet only now has it hit the news cycle.

yeah, I know the story... I'm sort of... 'in the field'. There is a handful of cases of this 'updated' strain in Europe - most likely more than a handful because typical diagnostic tests do not sequence the virus. And there is not such thing as a 'handful of cases' - by the time you identify a few - there are hundreds. It reminds me how were were watching updates on 'the first 300 cases' in NY in early-mid-March when the city was literally swimming in the virus - that's pretty much when we all got it. sigh. I suppose a good thing is that the new strain is **only** more infectious - not more pathogenic.
What also happened is that after tighter restrictions were announced, Londoners all piled onto trains to get out of there to spend xmas with their families spread the new mutation far & wide.
That new mutation will be everywhere sooner or later...
Here the people complain about a new lockdown which is going to start on the 28th of December. Firstly they only laughed at restriction narrowing down to 5 the number of people allowed to spend Xmas in one household. Now they are angry they won't be allowed to go skiing or go shopping from the 28th. That anger seems to me quite irrational. Nevertheless, before Xmas stores are open which is simply idiotic. Imagine the crowds in malls etc. Hotels open as well, enough to make a statement one is in business trip. On the other hand, schools and restaurants are closed. A real mess...
Anyway, after Xmas almost everything is going to be shut down, including a curfew in New Year's Eve from 7pm... Well, thanks for Netflix and HBO
But I don't see And I don't feel But tightly hold up silently My hands before my fading eyes And in my eyes Your smile
