“We will be releasing a new album,” Smith told NME. “I get fed up of saying this now! We will be playing from October and the new album will be out before then. We walked on [stage at the Ivors today] to a bit of new music, actually. Hopefully no one recorded it!”
Someone did record it (partially) and here it is…
First snippet from new album?

Very short but sounds a bit like Lost Wishes to me. Would love to get a longer shot...
That's one of those "How long is a piece of string?" questions. In all honesty, it takes as long as it takes. From what I've read, it seems the pressing capacity is booked (for the first one at least) so they are bound by a deadline at least. I also get the feeling Robert's getting frustrated himself. Bottom line is, if he thinks it's not ready, then it's not ready. It's not like a sausage machine. It's a body of work that shouldn't be like any other & should be treated with care. Anyway, if the capacity is booked & the deadline is met, then it should see the light of day when he say. Otherwise he'll have to concede that capacity to something else & wait all over again. Can't see him being happy with that happening.
Fair enough. I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed. I fear that if it doesn't come out this year, it may get shelved altogether. I'm a bit disappointed that he conceded that most people aren't interested in hearing new music. I'm not even sure if that is true. At festivals perhaps but not at arena shows.

He didn´t say it is their new music though. But okay it sounds like Cure. Based on this little snippet not really dark/doom and gloom, but more dreamy/melancholic.
Agreed. But it may be true, which is even more depressing.
I don't think its true of Cure fans but he must be aware that they're a bucket list band for many and the audience at gigs comprises both. If I was writing the setlists, first thing I'd do is cross out those 15 staples he insists on, have maybe 5 and then 10 new ones before looking at what hasn't been played for a while..

I agree on that, crossing out the 15 staples they insist on playing every gig. With one of the best back catalogues in music there shouldn't be any songs that they feel they have to play (even JLH, inbetween, BDC, lovesong, forest).
Robert has changed a lot in recent years. His previous attitude was to play whatever he wanted no matter who the audience was and songs from the current album. Live8 main set was Open/100 years/End They encored Glasto 86 with Faith/Pornography, hardly crowd pleasing hits. Dream tour 2000 were 3 hour gigs comprising of Bloodflowers album and only 4 singles played.
It makes no sense to me. He's saying the new album is their best ever but they'll only be a smattering of new songs in the upcoming tour because they have a big catalogue to play from. Imagine if he'd done that for instance in 1992 on the Wish tour. Just play High and Friday from Wish album then all old songs because they have a good catalogue.
His previous attitude would have been..we're releasing the best album we've ever done and can't wait to show off all the new songs at every show.

The hits aren't needed on paper but in reality they are inevitable. Just make it less predictable, no specific pop or rock encores like in 2016. Mix it up! Don't end a show on a cheerful note please. A tour based on a new album would be good too because it's been a while. 22 years?
Biggest tours, Prayer & Wish, didn't pander to the casual fans with easy listening sets. And are rightly revered as classic tours from a band at its peak.
I think we should be thankful that he-them still want to play and give us the pleasure of having the chance of watching them live once again after all these years. He can’t do whatever he pleases, don’t you think?
