I've been listening to some "new" shows, courtesy of the curecommunity here. Not too often I get something new, usually I'm just upgrading resolution. I have a good number of MP3 shows that are really low (128 kbs). When I download the higher resolution, I have pretty good hearing, but I can't hear the difference that FLAC fanatics can, sorry.
My live Cure archive has been cleaned up pretty well over the years, I have most shows correctly labeled, even down to the taper's initials in some cases. 193 gigabytes of MP3 shows. I have probably a hundred gigs of FLAC shows, but I just burn them to DVD-R and then delete them. Maybe some day in the future I'll have a FLAC stereo that plays them, must be a European thing.
Anyway, I'm up to 1986 now, a time of infinite possibilities as The Cure transitions to pure pop and away from the distortions of Pornography. I am eager to hear the eighties continue...
Just a $60 5-speaker Logitech setup with a bass speaker on the floor.
My car has a decent but not fancy stereo, it plays the bass part.
So no, I can't hear the flutter of hummingbird wings outside the concert hall when The Cure played. Maybe that's where the FLAC difference comes in. :-P
lol. Yeah, that's maybe hiding the differences by adding its own "colour". That's the reason a lot of that gear comes armed with all manner of audio effects & graphic equalisers. If you were to use a dedicated medium to high end audio system, you'd quickly notice the differences. It's one of the purest GIGO situations really. The sonic equivalent of putting a large magnifying glass on a low resolution picture. But as long as you enjoy your audio experience, then that's the main thing Your ears are without a doubt the best analytical tools on the planet
Everyone I know has ruined their hearing by playing their ear-covering headphones at high volume. I can still hear the slightest notes and melodies at low volume, so I've protected my hearing.

Good man. You only get one pair in a lifetime. Treasure them
I am putting 09-11-2002 Hamburg to good use in my car. FLAC>WAV>Audio CD, which sounds nice on my car stereo. The crowd is enthusiastic at each oldie being played. I picked my favorites!
Finally broke into listening to my 1985 shows. 08.12.1985 Padova - Palasport San Lazzaro (Italy) features crazed Italian fans screaming their primal inner piggy during Piggy in the Mirror. But we get a surprise performance of Secrets. Robert introduces it to tepid applause, but as the song starts the crowd cheers, not knowing the English name, I guess.
A very pleasing setlist, if you're like me. Wait, I forget everyone became a Cure fan differently. My first Cure albums were Staring at the Sea the singles compilation, and Mixed Up. So to me, any concert roughly following the Sea playlist sounds "correct", even though that isn't a real album.
As noted in the late 1984 shows, I enjoy hearing Screw performed now. This song really sucked as far as I was concerned, but for some reason I like hearing it now (like the bizarre Give Me It). We didn't hear anything like Screw again until Wild Mood Swings, as the band continued exploring whatever they were looking for.
Now enjoying 1985-09-14 Brighton Conference Centre. The taper was JW, the seeder at the old Cureconnections was steve. In the seeder notes, Steve warns "No lossy shenannigans & no selling or I simply delete it."
The final track is listed as "i dig you (with Frank Bell on vocals)". I think it's still Robert on "backing vocals" yelling "Yeah!". Having listened to a few of these 1985 shows, was real surprised at the playlist set on Shuffle: They put The Blood on as the first encore. It's always odd hearing Close to Me from a 1985 show. The remixed version was on constant airplay on MTV during the Mixed Up time period in 1990, so I get confused chronologically when I hear it here.

Oh yes. Bob was there on the yeahs & it was definitely Frank on lead vocals (I was at the show & nearly fainted when he came on for it). Why odd to hear Close To Me in 85 shows?
Yeah, I think Close To Me was a hit at this time so that's not a big surprise to hear it in the 1985 setlists. I don't like too much I Dig You, I think Frank Bell has an ugly voice and the song is not a great one. I kind of like Do You Wanna Touch. It's not really a song close to what the Cure is used to play but it's quite fun, I think.
You got me curious about Frank Bell (who is that?), I guess he had formed Cult Hero with Robert Smith back in the eighties as a very brief side project. His website now:

Different Frank Bell. Frank Bell was a chubby white postman when they did the Cult Hero single.
& the mixed up Close To Me is a travesty. ..........like the rest of that dog's egg of an album The "real" one is the HOTD album one without those awful horn sounds Genius hi hat riff & tense sounding. As it should be
In the middle of the pleasant task of listening to 22 more shows from 1985.
Something really odd happening to Mailand 15.07.85 Milano Teatro Tenda (Italy). The concert opens with The Baby Screams, and it sounds like there is a guitarist missing. Cure concerts says the whole band was there, so I don't know what is going on. Same lack of instruments on Play for Today. Nice to hear Secrets keep popping up from the second album, not sure why. Interesting to hear Robert introduce it to European audiences, only to have the crowd cheer in recognition to the notes and not the English title. The partial band sound continues. Was there some breakup or fight going on during this show?
"Um, this is gonna be a new single... this is called Inbetween Days."
