I am looking to stream media from my mac to my Sony receiver & it appears to do so requires the mac to be set up as a server (or have a server client installed)
Does anyone have any experience with OS X server or Plex?
The former is only $20 & would be nice to keep everything "native" but t does about a zillion things I'm not really going to need.
Plex is free & is a media server that would let me (according to the blurb) pipe media to my receiver & mobile devices.
All I really need is a means to be able to play media files from the mac & have the receiver pump them out of the TV display/ speakers.
Anyone had any experience or have any alternative suggestions?
Your receiver has Apple AirPlay compatibility doesn't it? I do it that way with my Mac mini and Denon receiver. Apologies if I'm being dumb, I'm not super techy

It does indeed. But I don't see the airplay icon on itunes anywhere to be able to link them
Was going to say, Plex worked well on my Xperia but, ultimately didn't need it as I can just "throw" music/videos/photos to the AV Receiver or blu ray player, no other software required.
That's my goal too. I've cracked airplay now, so music's sorted. Now need to figure out how to throw video directly from the Mac.
From the likes of YouTube? On your Mac there'll be a mirroring icon at the top right on the bar. You'll need the latest OS though & I think a new machine, as my MacBook Pro does it but the OH's Pro is an older machine & although it has Mavericks I don't think he's got it. If you've got Mavericks installed have a look. It looks like this, but only on a page etc which has video on it; Google homepage no, YouTube yes
