Over a decade ago I wrote a piece at PopMatters reviewing a then-newly released box set that touches on the topic at hand. For what it's worth, enjoy!
Thanks for posting the link to your piece, weedyburton79! It was such a fun read.
I love the bit about Cleopatra Records. I can remember our radio station getting a good amount of stuff from Cleopatra from about 1993-1995. The first one I clearly remember was the Mysterious Encounters compilation.
I love this characterization of their compilations:
Cleopatra Records' formula of "one Bauhaus, one Christian Death, one Alien Sex Fiend track each and the rest just filler by Razed in Black and Rosetta Stone and Switchblade Symphony."
What about Leaether Strip, lol?
The mention of 4AD representation and the link to Clan of Xymox's Muscoviet Mosquito reminds me of when I got a 4AD compilation (Lonely Is An Eyesore) with the purchase of a pair of Docs back in the 90's. I still have that CD. It has some nice material on it. Nowadays if you bought a pair of Docs maybe you'd get a Linkin Park download?
You're a good writer and that was a great review piece!

Oh, geez. Yeah, Leæther Strip! Totally forgot about them!
Lonely Is an Eyesore is probably the high watermark for 4AD comps. "Muscoviet Mosquito", "Fish", "Hot Doggie"... great stuff. I remember buying the import back in the day. Never got music with my Docs purchases in the '80s. Somehow I feel like I must've missed out.
