If anyone's interested, the new Depeche Mode album is, to put it mildly, not particularly good. There are occasional glimpses of classic DM, but they're all too brief & the songs soon get to be aimless, plodding dirges. Wagging Tongue (track 2) is the closest it gets to being borderline interesting. Other than that, it's a bit of a dog's egg really
I figured I should give the new album a fair shake... Some of the songs are interesting musically, but... man, lyrically they are straight up garbage. It's a bummer because I think half of them were co-written by Richard Butler. But then again, I didn't particularly like the last Psych Furs album either.

here have been recent posts about Nick Cave, Siouxsie , The Sisters which I can appreciate, but I've never understood why there have been so many posts about DM. It's a completely different music genre & I see no links with TC. I could understand if DM were being discussed on Yazoo, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys forum

People who listen to TC can listen many other bands/genres... it doesn't have to be something similar. And DM just released new album and are on tour so of course it will be more posts now, they're big band. When their tour is over, there won't be many posts here...

Not sure it's about "links" per se. There are bands & even genres that fans of The Cure also tend to gravitate to. DM is one of those bands I suppose. I certainly like them or, at least, did until they became extraordinarily boring. If it's a link you're looking for then David M Allen did produce & remix a few DM tracks (well before they got extraordinarily boring).
The Cure has never done anything in the vein of synth pop, that is very true. No similarities whatsoever between these two bands historically. I fully agree!

Not entirely sure I'd agree with that. See exhibit A. & exhibit B. & (arguably) a massive chunk of exhibit C While not "pure" synth pop, the vein is certainly not be ignored at all.

There are a few similarities really. Both bands burst onto the alternative scene in the early 80s and garnered a huge amount of fans during the same decade. & both fanbases generally follow both bands so their appeal is fairly mutual. They seem to inhabit the same band on the alternative spectrum. Bob even went so far as recording a cover of World In My Eyes for a DM tribute album. True, not every fan of The Cure likes DM & vice versa. But there's probably more that do than don't. & that's not to say that they're wrong or right. You like what you like right?
