I am looking for ideas on what do to do for a charity function...
Last year I did a lip-synch battle... and even though it was a success and my bottle of wine and I had a great time, it did not go according to plan and became a very big headache, very quickly...
So I am looking for something that will be super easy.... Bingo was one suggestion, I might just do Bingo...
Something super easy? Bingo is a great idea...I've noticed themed proms have become popular lately, they seem to have replaced the charity rock show. Adults dressing up for a themed 80s or 90s prom. Why people would want to relive that experience is beyond me though!
We do a Dragon Boat race in my organization here. All the members of our team, and cheerleaders who don't want to be in the boat, ask to be "sponsored" by everyone we know, then we give all the donations to the year's chosen charity. It is pretty easy and lots of fun. Or you could do a walk or run or tennis tournament, whatever works for you.
Casino Nights, or a ball, or a raffle are also ideas, but require more money to be put into a cool place to hold the event, and people willing to donate items in the case of the raffle. Bingo probably needs some prizes to be donated as well, but easy otherwise. Good luck!
B13, not sure if you're active these days, but thanks for starting this thread.
I belong to a charity knitting group. When I started it I was really hoping it would be a diverse group of people knitting, including people of all ages, genders, etc, etc. Turns out it's a bunch of us middle age and older ladies sitting around weekly, but that's OK, we still enjoy each other's company.
Here are the first two rounds of knitting we've done...
First session was for a homeless shelter serving LGBTQIA teenagers. Most of them are homeless, because their families don't "support" their identities, which is heartbreaking. Here's what we made for them:
Just this week we finished knitting items for newborns and their mothers. There is a residence here that houses up to 9 young women who are either pregnant or have newborns for up to one year. Here's what we just dropped off for them:
If anyone out there knits and ever wants to join in our efforts remotely, please let me know. We would welcome your participation! We are getting more prolific with each venture. Next we might do teddy bears for children in Africa who have AIDS. We haven't decided for sure, yet.
Super cool @notkristie. I knit but life has kept me too busy lately. It’s been a while, and I’m not sure I could knit teddy bears (I tend to be a simple hat, scarf, and mittens knitter... following complex pattern directions make my brain think I’m in math class) but I’d like to help out one day!

I don't have a lot of time to knit, either, which is a shame because I find it really relaxing. FWIW, I'm really bad at multitasking and knitting. If I try to have a conversation or watch tv, I f^ck up. That's probably a large part of why it's so relaxing.
In any event, I'll either update this thread and tag you or PM you when we decide on our next charity. IIRC, the bears can be knit either flat and seamed, or in the round, whichever the knitter finds easier. It will be a challenge for me, too, since I've never done color work before, and these utilize three colors of yarn. Save
My friend's widow asked that in lieu of flowers that contributations be made in memory of John Stenberg to the link below. The Elks is a service organization in the states & John liked this charity. There is information on the link that explains what this program is about. Anything that helps out kids in need is ok in my book. Just putting this up in case anyone would like to help. Thanks!
Link below is about an event benefiting the Jimmy fund, a charity out of Boston that does a lot of good work in regards to children with cancer. This post is from 3 Dimes Down, Drive-by Truckers fan site. A friend there wrote it & there is a link to contribute in the post. Sadly, this is very personal for him as you will read. steve , do you think a permanent sticky for charity things like this would be work? Think it would be a good thing as giving back is always a good thing. Thanks, Chuck
