I have had this audio for some time but apart from queuing it in a playlist and getting on with chores I've not sat with it.
Today I took it apart and really enjoyed it in playback. In comparing END from the LD and the 3CD Wish I see huge variance in the dynamic range and the compression hides so much detail. Ofc that could be due to the actual recording, mics, mixing or whatever but the remastered version sucks. It does sound powerful, but that's not actually a recommendation.
Decided to give the LD some gain and limit the peaks while I had it open for editing (the track marks needed some adjustment) and patched some audience sounds to remove the gap between Side A/B.
Slightly revised, it pops, and the limiting doesn't force my BT speaker into protection. 😅 A necessary compromise, but one that pulled this show out of the relegation bin and onto my devices. There is perhaps too much DR on the original for my own use.
I can't remember ever hearing the tease of 'Hello, I Love You' before today and there are many small details in the mix that give these performances a life of their own.
Ridiculous, but it took more than 30 years for me to get into this album. Previously I'd only had the version of A Forest on my radar.
I am very pleasantly surprised.
It would be so perfect If you would just fall out the window
^^ Not so much, once I rendered and exported I had the show on in the background. The version did stand out even then which is itself remarkable. It's a song that I have always found unimpressive.
I put the gig on my mobile so that I could listen to it on my walkabouts.
