Yes. Another list
I managed to narrow this down to ten, although last year i was caught out when motifs snuck a late gem in so this could get amended.
Bleach Lab - Lost In A Rush Of Emptiness.
I have been listening to Bleach Lab for nearly three years now & every thing they’ve done has been outstanding.
This album has taken an age to make an appearance but every second of it makes it all worthwhile. There is not a duff track on it &, for me, it edged top spot on account of some seriously nice production.
Crystal Canyon - Stars & Distant Light
With my favourite song of the year on this, it was always going to feature fairly high. This is a wonderfully balanced dream pop/ shoegaze album without all that absurd pitch bending nonsense to distract you from the heavenly collection of tunes.
Fin del Mundo Todo va hacia el mar
This qualifies I think as it was an album released this year. It might be the first 2 EPs bundled but it’s still technically an album. The finest Argentinian shoegaze you will come across.
Coach Party - KILLJOY
Another one I’ve followed for a couple of years & another debut full length after a run of singles & eps. This one is all sorts of rowdy. A rollercoaster of power pop that is relentless.
Shonen Knife - Our Best Place
Only three songs about food & drink on this peach of a comeback. You can’t be help but smile from ear to ear when these women start doing their thing as well as this.
Taleen Kali - Flower Of Life
Another debut album. KEXP called it a shoegaze wonderland, but it’s much more than that. It’s packed with dirty guitars backed by a weighty rhythm section as Kali does Debbie Harry with an attitude turned up to 11. Huge songs with even more huge choruses ensured this one had a spot in my top ten this year.
Pip Blom - Bobbie
I still listen to 2019’s Boat regularly & this year I attended a listening party on bandcamp for Bobbie. Pip Blom have evolved to become quite a force to be reckoned with & the lead single, Get Back, is a testament to that fact. The album is as punchy as they come and even if it can verge on the radio-friendly spectrum it’s a really exciting listen.
Magic Wands - Switch
Got to include something a bit on the goth end of the spectrum really. It’s dark. It’s swirly. It’s funning lovely is what it is. Three years after Illuminate, Magic Wands get back to doing what they do the best & flying under the radar while doing it.
Emma Anderson - Pearlies
It’s so nice to have Emma back on the scene. After the all too brief Lush re-union, Miki took centre stage with her Piroshka (which I still insist is spelt wrong) project. So to hear Emma unleash this was a real treat. It’s a trip with one of the finest songwriters Britain produced & there are more than a few harks back to vintage Lush.
Screaming Females - Desire Pathways
This one’s an all out rock album. It’s loud, it’s fierce, & from the get go you know full well what you’re in for.
Desert Train is worth the price of admission alone…….. *makes devil horns*
How about sharing your top long players this year?
