Heading west again, the lads travel 1400km (~2.5 million Yamaha Recording Custom kick drums) to the Paraguay capital Asunción.
Having scoured the fact sheets about the city, it seems to be much like every other south American capital city on paper.
It has a park. It’s the seat of government. It’s the cultural centre of the country. It has roads (with cars) & it even has a McDonald’s. So far, exactly the same as just about everywhere else in Latin America. Apart from the ones that also have pyramids.
So what makes the mother of cities so special?
Well, pub quizzes basically. By 1537, pub quiz teams had learnt the answers to the simple tie-breaker questions such as, “How high is Mt Everest?”, “How many words are there in the Bible?” & the extraordinarily easy, “How may times have Sean Bean’s characters been killed off?” (yes, we all know it’s 23). So unscrupulous pub landlords saw a potential goldmine in Asunción.
The scandal became front page news as teams who had all paid a pound per person to enter & thought of a stupid team name were suddenly presented with a question nobody knew the answer to. As a result, the winnings pot went straight into the landlords’ pockets as nobody could possibly win.
TV true crime documentaries were produced & even a movie was said to be in the works detailing the sheer sordid depths of the great pub quiz conspiracy & it all boiled down the the one question.
“What is the capital of Paraguay called?”. Some of the worst offenders (the guy who runs the Dog & Duck in Shardlow for example) even went as far as insisting on the full answer (La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa Maria da la Asunción).
Hardly any of the entrants knew there was even a country called Paraguay, let alone what the capital was called & many assumed it was a fictional place from the Marvel comic universe.
The revelations were so high profile that laws were introduced to strictly regulate pub quiz tie breakers to prevent this sort of heinous act ever repeating itself. Google was even forced to use bigger letters on the Paraguay map.
I want to say a huge thanks to the Bloke Down The Pub for cluing me in on this seedy practice that took place.
Now that everyone knows where Asunción is, fans of our idols will be arriving & grabbing a hearty meal of pira clado partnered expertly with a Pilsen Ñande before heading off to what we hope will be a wonderful show.
Quite a simple flag for today
