The past year or so I've been pretty focused on making sure I'm always paying for the work of living musicians instead of streaming it. When I think of the role of musicians in society and their importance (along with artists of ALL types) I think of bards and wandering minstrels. The current state of affairs towards seems to be veering strongly towards "kick the bard / minstrel in the gonads."
I have been purchasing music pretty much solely through Bandcamp, which in and of itself is limited, but suits my needs for recorded music. I also have it on good authority they're a relatively good company to work with as an artist, which makes me feel confident (keeping in mind they were just sold and the dust hasn't yet settled and their user interface is really Shirtty).
How do people here budget for their music? What do you buy versus stream? Would you pay over the minimum purchase price for material on a service such as Bandcamp that offers that option?
More broadly, I wonder if people have any thoughts about government responsibility for arts funding. If you can say...
I buy vinyl records. I listen to new bands on the radio, Spotify, Youtube, Bandcamp or whatever medium available and try to get the records when I really like the band/artist. More or less the same I’ve been doing my whole life.
Last record I’ve purchased is the first Daniel Johnston tape “Songs of Pain”, one of my all time favourite albums. Yes, I know it is completely stupid.

I haven’t thought about Daniel Johnston in so long! If you want it then it’s not stupid.

What I meant is that it is a bit stupid to buy a vinyl of an album that was originally home recorded in a very low-fi way to a cassette. But I love that album so much so I don’t care.
