It was quite difficult to dig up any notable facts about today’s city, so I had to drop a line to our old friend, Bloke Down The Pub, who helped me out…. sort of.
Moving on from Buenos Aires, The Cure & their entourage hop on a ferry across the Rio de la Plata on their 236km (roughly 214,000 Reverend Spacehawks) short hop to Montevideo.
Originally called San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo, the name was shortened in a bid to compete with Blockbustervideo, with the more streamlined Montevideo name fitting very smartly on the staff uniform & name badge. Not to mention being easier to search on google.
So successful was this re-branding that Blockbustervideo eventually called it a day (except for that one hold-out in Oregon) while Montevideo still flourishes to this day offering DVD & Blu-Ray rental, video on demand & streaming services, as well as fresh popcorn & hot dogs to the grateful residents of Uruguay’s capital city.
When not enjoying a mate with some mates, the Montevideonians (as the natives are known) can, if they feel like it, take a leisurely stroll along the Rambla. This is sure to kill a few hours as it’s over 13km (11,000 Ampeg SVT-810E 8x10 Bass Cabinets laid end to end) long but it does have a McDonald’s along the way to keep your strength up for the marathon trek to take in the stunning views of the River Plate. Which, rather mysteriously, is neither a river nor a plate.
But, speaking of plates, the starving masses heading to the venue today will almost certainly stop for a plate of freshly made chivito and an ice cold Patricia before heading off the Antel Arena for what we fully expect to be another superb show.
Let’s go with the city’s coat of arms today (as they don’t seem to have a flag).
