I've heard this song many times. When I first moved out of home and got a roommate, I bought the single CD of Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. (After you bought it, the record label had a special notice that they had omitted "Hey You!" to save you money, so thoughtful.)
Anyway, I was listening to this song in my car and of course there is the real violin melody, maybe it's a keyboard line. But there is a mystery here:
What are the guitars doing on this album track? Forget the live versions, listen to the album cut. There are interesting and odd things being played behind the violins, on guitar.
I think in the studio, they had the basic song, and the band decided to jazz things up by doing stuff in the background on guitar that you wouldn't notice in the "simple" song.
Well, it's been almost 40 years, and I'm hearing things that I never heard before...
For me, the song, or at least the guitar parts, seem slightly out of tune. Deliberately so in fact. I remember seeing them do it live on the last The Tube ever & it was the first time I'd heard it. I suppose because it was about a month before the album release. I was almost hiding behind the sofa because i thought that they had forgotten to tune all the guitars. But then the studio version appeared & it was practically the same.

I closed my eyes to listen to minimize distractions.
Do you mean the wah-wah stuff behind the violin? I think it fits nicely. It adds some texture and emphasis. IMO, it would be too dull without it because the other parts are pretty straightforward. It fits right in to me, but I liked listening to it closely after so long trying to pick it apart.
In any event, hearing new things after so long is a good sign for both listener and songwriter.

My 2 cents : I know it's kind of f***ed up but there are actual guitar pedals designed for kind of giving a detune sound to you guitar - once it's been nicely tuned !
So maybe one of those ?
I've got a cheap NUX modulation pedal that can do just that (and luckily other things too). This is "interesting" for a few minutes, but it's a "hit or miss" choice to have this in a recording, IMHO.
Listening back a few hours after, you can have that exact feeling - did I forgot to tune the guitar ???
