In high school the metalheads would hang out at the gas station across the street from school smoking. I wish I had known at the time they were probably AWESOME and really smart, despite trying to blow themselves up.
I didn't discover I like metal until college and right now I'm going through a big black metal phase. At this point, I think I am too old to "outgrow" my love for metal. It seems to only get stronger.
There are lots of reasons I like it. It reminds me of classical music in many ways, which I listened to a lot of growing up. It gives me the energy to keep going and get things done. It allows me to imagine going aggro and smashing things, which is something women aren't given permission to do. I admire musicians who can play with the speed and technique you hear in the genre. More reasons I'm probably not thinking of right now.
Some of my favorite metal artists are:
- Melvins (second only to The Cure, in my book) - Amenra - Metallica - Trhä - Cloud Rat
There's some bands I like that flirt with metal, but that I don't feel actually qualify. I know that's up for debate.
There's a lot I haven't heard so I'm hoping maybe some people here will drop some names they like and I can discover new stuff.
I figure there must be some other music lovers here who identify as metalheads. Anyone?

Old skööl metalhead, here. If you like classical and Metallica, you should check out Metallica's S&M album from the late '90s. Basically, it's the band playing their songs with Michael Kamen and the SF Symphony Orchestra. Pretty cool.

I didn't know this existed! Thanks!
I don't have any Metallica studio albums past And Justice...

I really wouldn't consider myself a metalhead, but I do listen to Guns 'n' Roses, Babymetal, and Marilyn Manson (DON'T JUDGE ME!!!).
I do have one Rammstein cd and 5 Metallica cds. But, I don't consider myself a fan of either band (although, "bass solo-take one" is very impressive!). I'll listen to the music, but I won't run to the store to buy the latest cd. Unless it's at work and I can get a staff discount on it!😉

I’m so glad to see your shoutout to Cliff!!!! I would love to have heard him play double bass (not sure he ever did). Early Metallica is so great.

Well, I finally broke down and got some Iron Maiden cds. The 2 Blaze sings on (bargain priced at a local record store) and "Number of the Beast" for $5 at Walmart! I also added to my Metallica collection with "Master of Puppets". Again found at Walmart for $5! What the HELL is up with Walmart and cheap metal?! And here's the funny thing...I had NO intentions of buying those cds, I just got them cos Dolly Parton was sold out!

If you like the Maiden, let me know so I might be convinced to give them a proper listen! And you can't go wrong with MOP.

From what I've heard of Maiden so far (and I'm sorry to say this) I'm finding it difficult to find the "heavy" in the heavy metal. To me they just sound like a hard rock band. When I listen to them, I have no desire to headbang. I just want to sit quietly and listen to the music. And maybe dance...🙂

i found their first albums more close to punk than metal but yes they are Heay metal as far as Led Zeppelin was...

I do like quite a bit of metal - love Iron Maiden, Metallica, Death Angel, Death (those they were considered more death metal), Anthrax, Megadeth - I like the thrash metal most.

I’m sensing a theme in the names of the bands you like. Death!
