Covering another 456 miles (or 688,000 tennis nets) downwards, our Bob & his band arrive in Tampa.
After Gavino Gutierrez saw rumours of wild guava trees growing all over the Tampa Bay area on twitter. So he made the trip from The Big Apple down south to nab some product for his tropical fruit packing firm.
However, after scouring the streets, asking locals & being laughed out of bars, it became clear he was told a whopper prompting an angry reply.
On his way back he told his mate Vince Ybor in an instagram rant how he’d been misled but that the place was ideal for making cigars.
Ybor bought Ybor city, as it had the same name as him. He built a cigar factory there & ordered loads of flat pack houses from Ikea. Because Gutierrez was pretty handy with an Allen key & even had his own custom set, Ybor employed him to assemble the little houses for his highly skilled cigar assemblers & technicians &, within a few years, Tampa became the cigar capital of the world. Hence the nickname, The Big Guava.
The patented method for making the higher end Cuban cigars soon translated into a local dance that swept the world like wildfire. The Twist became a sensation after Hank Ballard wrote a song about Tampa kids doing it on one of his visits & he & his Midnighters band included it as a B-side to the Teardrops On Your Letter single in 1959. The twist became the forerunner to many of the contemporary dances we see in discotheques today such as the jerk, the watusi, the mashed potato &, of course, the funky chicken. The funky chicken being a definite nod to the wild chicken population roaming the streets of the city.
Dodging the poultry pedestrians today will be our very own fiveswinglive who will obviously not be able to resist a Cuban sandwich & a cheeky Reef Donkey or two. After which he’ll make his way to what we hope to be an incredible penultimate show of the tour.
