Clocking up another 123 miles (or 247,000 Airstream Classics) ) left & down a bit our meandering musicians reach Columbia.
“Mind the step! Mind the step! Mind the ste…too late” are the first things you instantly think of about Columbia. Known for her shiny hats, matching bow ties & over the top rouge, Columbia was the ex lover of the world famous professor Frank-N-Furter. The accomplished tap dancer (apart from the steps bit) was soon dumped by Furter for his delivery boy & occasional saxophonist Meat Loaf. However, Meat could not resist Columbia’s shock of red hair & stripy hot pants, dubbing her his “hot patootie” thus betraying the professor and creating a deadly love triangle which was ultimately to be the end of him and his brand of dad rock. A tender subject.
Columbia’s resentment of Furter’s actions reached boiling point when she lashed out at him claiming he just used people while wearing her best pyjamas. This was too much & Furter signalled his faithful handy man, Riff Raff, to activate the sonic transducer & turn her to stone.
But, having been brought back to life, she continued her complaint while waving a feather boa about for effect. She was eventually zapped to death by Riff Raff & his big laser fork who had effectively got fed up with the lot of them.
To honour her bravery in the face of such adversity, Columbia became the personification of the USA albeit with a slightly modified outfit. This led James W Rouse to also name his “people’s city” after the flame haired firecracker.
This fact is often contested & there is a school of thought that he named the city after a record label on account of the fact he was a massive Manic Street Preachers fan. But I’m not buying that garbage for one second.
Rolling into town today will be finalsound & Mook stopping briefly for a Kent Island fish sandwich and some Aspiring Redneck before heading off for what we hope is a wonderful show.
For all the down-to-earth blandness of Columbia, their flag is a riot.
