After a sensational 1st night, night 2 promises to be just as much of a blast.
I struggled yesterday so I asked an old friend for help again. Thank you Bloke Down The Pub for your input as always.
Montréal was, in the olden days, bereft of anything in the way of landmarks. So the local boffins got together, charged with finding a solution that would be both iconic & functional at the same time.
While buildings seemed to fit the brief, the Montréalian leaders were already wary, having copied many of the elements of their newfangled hockey game from existing games with just fighting added.
A stroke of genius then happened. With the need to re-use all the rock & dirt that had been removed from parts of the city to make space for ice rinks, the planners & engineers set about constructing a mountain in the middle of Montréal where there was a big gap. It was seen as the perfect balance. Somewhere for people to hike, go tobogganing, get a 360º view of city firework displays, something pretty to look at, & somewhere Simon Gallup could ride his bike when The Cure were in town eh.
Initially called Mount Real, the name was deemed to be not grandiose enough & so, under cover of darkness, it was changed to Mont Royal which also pleased the French speaking residents who had trouble pronouncing “mount” & google maps was updated later that day.
However, some years later, plans for a new downtown area with shopping centres, office buildings, & hotels were discovered by cleaners behind the photocopier in the town hall building. They had apparently slipped down there during the heated discussions over where to put the mountain.
With nowhere for Montréalians to go shopping or to stay in a hotel, this proved a problem.
But, as with the mountain, a solution was found. That solution was to build it underground in a spare void they had recently discovered. The RÉSO, as it’s known today even includes shortcuts between university campuses and serves as refuge from the city’s fiercely cold winters when all people want to do is buy a new pair of shoes or stock up on Nutella without getting half frozen to death.
So vast was this shopping complex that local songstress Celine Dion penned a song in tribute titled My Cart Will Go On. This was picked up on before release by James Cameron who offered Dion a suitcase full of cash to re-record it with different lyrics for his film about a boat.
olivier , limegreen , Danielle , hairqween & fiveswinglive will be dodging all formula 1 fans today as they try to find somewhere quiet to enjoy some pâté chinois and a few glasses of rather cheerily named La Fin Du Monde before heading off to have a wonderful show eh.
Using the leftover colours from yesterday for this one.
