Clocking up another 344 miles (over 50,000 double decker buses) the collective of composers head to Cleveland in the state that gave the world drinking straws, Ohio.
I don’t know very much about this place so I had some help from the bloke down the pub again.
A bitter row marked the birth of Cleveland. Originally called Cleaveland, the owners of the local rag claimed they couldn’t fit the whole name on the masthead. So they arbitrarily changed the name sparking division between Cleavers & Clevers, as the two warring factions were known. Eventually the Clevers won out on account of them being…well… clever.
The city is located on the shores of the Cuyahoga River, which was named after an R.E.M. song before they became intolerably dull. Interestingly, Cuyahoga actually means “we were good once” in Mohawk.
The river is somewhat of a natural mystery though as it has somehow caught on fire no fewer than 13 times.
Historically, Cleveland was renowned for having the shortest golf courses in the world & players started to get bored of the game as they could only manage to whack the ball a few yards (or roughly 40 Walmart shopping carts). So it was a bit of a revolution when Coburn Haskell, after numerous experiments with rubber bands, patented a new, improved golf ball that could travel almost 333 Walmart shopping carts when given a some real welly with a golf stick. This led to multiple applications for golf course extensions to accommodate the new big hitters so they could spend more time walking & trying to find their newfangled super balls which also prompted the invention of the golf cart in California.
It’s no surprise that the city is home to the Rock Hall of Fame as the term “rock & roll” was invented here. Not only that, the first ever rock concert took place in the local arena. The ill-fated Moondog Coronation Ball ended in chaos as ticket bastard had oversold it & crowds outside broke through the doors to see Paul Williams and his Hucklebuckers raise the roof with their rowdy cover of The Huckle-Buck.
Thankfully RS has reined in ticket bastard this year & so maccatori , weedyburton79 & iwannashagsimon won’t need to storm the venue after their delicious Polish Boys washed down with some ice cold Vortex. Let’s hope they have a terrific night.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the variety of flags this tour, so I think we're good with this today.
