Today The Cure arrive in New Orleans to kick off their Shows Of A Lost World tour so let’s have a brief look at the city’s past &, indeed present.
Taking its name from the hugely popular (but not as popular as the other ones) NCIS New Orleans, the city has been passed around a fair bit.
Colonised by the French in the 18th century, it was handed over to the Spanish a few years later & then back the the French again as the locals’ demand for authentic baguettes & croissants became too much for the Spanish to cope with. But, renowned short bloke, Napolean eventually sold it to the United States for an undisclosed fee (plus service charges).
The city boasts the label of being the most haunted city in the USA & is widely thought to be the inspiration for Crystal Cove as used by the most famous ghost hunters in the world. A claim backed up by one of their most famous cases.
The main religion is Voodoo & chicken sacrifices are all too commonplace as the bones are highly sought after, explaining the possible origin of boneless chicken wings that are the staple of fried food outlets throughout the city.
New Orleans is prone to flooding thanks to being close to several large bodies of water & the fact the drains suck (likely due to being blocked up with chicken carcasses) so a complex system of levees has been constructed. These were famously mocked by Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie in 1929 & then again by Led Zeppelin in 1971 with the song now banned from all public places within the city boundaries.
& yes. We have a The Cure link to NOLA. Apart from the highly acclaimed Burn, which a widely regarded voodoo anthem, RS penned a ditty titled Fascination Street which was apparently inspired by the famous Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. So get your selfies done there folks.
Arriving for today’s show in The Big Easy at the ridiculously named Smoothie King Center will be sang & spiralcure who will be no doubt availing themselves of a bowl of jambalaya with sang having the vegan version. I this will no doubt be washed down with a few Black Cabin Smoked Ales before our intrepid duo head to the event. Let’s wish them a wonderful time.
