How do other people in our lives relate to our enjoyment of this band? My first bf was a jerk and would call RS' vocals "whining and crying" and sometimes even just turn it off without asking (guess what happened to him?). Another friend of mine I hadn't seen in years chided me that she LOVES Morrissey but The Cure is her most-hated band ever.
Yesterday I got a random email from an old high school friend. She was one of only a couple of people I actually knew at my high school since I was dancing all the time and never socialized outside that. Her family came to the US in exile from Iran because her father was an academic of some sort, I believe. She used to have to lie to go out with me, even though we didn't do anything remotely bad besides drive around, listen to music and maybe smoke cigarettes.
In her email she asked if I remembered giving her a Cure cassette. She thanked me for what I introduced her to through that gesture and said that it had made a mark. I'm pretty sure it was this one:
It made my day!
Do you have friends or others in your life that either love or hate TC?

excellent story!
A couple of days ago I introduced a new work friend to M, he said he loved the guitars but "the singer sounds like he's in pain" ahahhahahahah.. This guy loves all sorts of terrible EDM though, so I can't really expect him to like any "good" music......
Most of my friends do not like The Cure, though a couple are into a wide variety of "alternative" music and do appreciate them to one degree or another.
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!

Hahahahha, that work friend should get together with my old bf! Can't blame you for trying, right?

hahah you try but some people seemingly don't WANT to be helped.......
I've got another friend who used to be interested in playing bass, so I created a YT playlist of amazing The Cure basslines, he couldn't get past RS's voice, apparently...

Ha ha yeah.
To be fair if your goal was to showcase how they emphasise or not-bury bass, you could pretty much pick any random songs, even going back as far as 3IB. But we all know this, and do our best to educate those poor souls who are so so so empty…..
These were my faves at the time, of maybe just that day!

I have a lots of friends in my online life that like The Cure. In physical life there are a few. My best friend came to see them twice in Budapest. He's not too keen on some stuff but there are a few tracks he really likes & he enjoyed the shows which was good. My local pub lets me whip together playlists on the PC there & occasionally I drop a The Cure track in but I won't ram anything down anyone's throat just because i like it. If I think a friend will like it then I'll let them make their own mind up. The Cure, having a broad palette will usually catch one of them's attention & knowing my friends like I do, it's not so hard to spot one or two tunes they might feel falls into their ballpark. There has been the odd occasion when someone's asked me to make a mix/ playlist which I'll happily do. If they listen to it then great. If not then also great. The last friend I met here in Balatonfured who liked The Cure also liked many of the other bands I like. She saw me in one of my Pronography t shirts in a pub one day & came & started talking to me about the best The Cure concert she'd ever seen & I made a copy of it for her. She never knew there was a recording of it & was dead chuffed to have a souvenir of her favourite The Cure show. I'm not really bothered if my friends don't like The Cure. That's totally okay. We like what we like. I don't like some of the music they listen to either & it's nice to be able to poke fun at each other's tastes & we can do that because neither party tries to force something on the other. In all honesty, I think it'd be quite boring if all my friends liked the same thing & I'm pretty grateful that I have developed an interest in other bands that I've maybe not paid much attention to before through my friends.

I agree. Better to put something together with what people will actually enjoy in mind without making it into a lesson like My Fair Lady. When we have people over I honestly never play TC. People can see from looking around that I like them.
You're so lucky re: your pub. I still have dreams of dj'ing on the radio sometimes (the art of the well-executed segue from one song to the next on vinyl, ahhhhh) and really miss making setlists.

That's a great meeting story. I can't imagine how happy she must have been to have that show.

This indeed.

The sad fact is I know no one IRL who likes/knows of The Cure. I told my co-worker I'm going on vacation to see them. She just gave me a huge blank stare. So, I have to explain who they are by saying "they went after Ticketmaster. It was on the news." Or if a Cure song plays at work I tell her about it. At that point, I get the "oh yeah. I've heard of them" response.

My other half likes The Cure. He really likes Reeves (we both met him twice and his lovely wife Susan. Truly nice people) and likes Simon's bass playing. Reeves guitar work reminds him of bands he had always loved yet he says "Reeves adds a psychadelic flare to it which is amazing" The cure are all around his age , he's 64 same as Robert so he grew up with the same music they did more or less. He can hear that in their playing. His only criticism when I told him hairqween and I were going to see them in June was "how many times can you see one band?" As he does not do that. Only band he went saw twice was Paul McCartney. But otherwise he is supportive as music is a huge part of our lives. Even if it wasn't, if someone truly loved you for you they will support what you love.

I think most people I tell about The Cure don't recognize the name. It's only after they hear "Friday, I'm In Love" or "Lovesong" that they associate the name and the music. Sadly, I don't believe they are fans and just like those few songs cos they get played in stores. The sad thing is, I live in the Chicago suburbs so I'd expect to find lots of Cure fans here!
The old high school friend I wrote about in the beginning of the thread has taken my extra ticket for 6/20 at MSG. It will be her first time seeing the band live. Such a happy ending!
