I am a relatively new Cure fan, having only picked them up seriously during the lockdown / quarantine. My very first show was Milan on November 4th, and then I was fortunate enough to do Glasgow, Leeds and 2 nights at Wembley. It's nice to meet you all!
In this short amount of time, The Cure has been a massive influence on my life and a huge inspiration to just keep on keepin on. I do owe a great deal of gratitude for the music as it helped me through some really difficult times.
Even though I'm new here, I am hoping to eventually become an esteemed member of this forum, and I would love to learn what I can about the band (since I've missed out on so much).
I hope to make new friends here, as the Cure community has been nothing but absolutely wonderful in my experience so far. It's a pleasure to meet you all, and please don't hesitate to reach out and comment. I'd be happy to hear from you
As you mention you only recently got into The Cure, just out of cure-iosity (see what I did there), what album or song first drew you to The Cure? In other words, from what album or song did you start listening to them?

I am learning how to use these forums, so I hope I am replying to your thread correctly.
I love what you did there, btw
So I had always known about The Cure and was familiar with a couple of their songs growing up, namely "Friday, I'm in Love" and "Lovesong". Beyond that, I hadn't listened to their discography, but was always told that with my taste in music that I would absolutely love them.
During the lockdown when we couldn't go out for a while, I decided it was time to dive into some bands that I said I would listen to, but never had the time. I did what anyone without a clue would do, and I Googled "Best Cure album", which led me to "Wish". I now know that this is completely up for debate, but nonetheless, it was the first album I listened to from beginning to end. I knew as soon as those first notes of "Open" started that I was completely in love. I quickly picked out all my favorite jams, and if I can come away with more than 5 favorite songs on an album, it's a top favorite. Open, FTEOTDGS, Wendy Time, Doing the Unstuck, FIIL, TWIP, End..... Just an absolutely enthralling love affair from beginning to End.
From there, I made a little game to pass the time, and I downloaded and listened to a new album every week. That kept me looking forward to the following week and helped me get through Quarantine / Lockdown.
My most absolutely favorite song ever from The Cure is "Doing the Unstuck" because I'm absolutely enamored with that song. I absolutely love the idea of completely tearing your world down and destroying everything you know in order to achieve your own happiness. It was one of those songs with those juxtapositions that I would come to love RS for as time went on.
Thank you for asking me. I'm already starting to feel at home! <3
Welcome, you can't go wrong with Wish, it's got a perfect mix of what the band do best, dark epics, beautiful ballads, rock, curepop. Definitely one of their best albums (4th fave personally)

I think if I were to put them in order, my top 3 would be: 1. Wish 2. Wild Mood Swings 3. The Cure (2004)
My least favorite album is "The Top".. I've really tried to like it. Aside from "Shake Dog Shake" and "The Caterpillar", I really can't get into it at all.. But luckily I have all these other albums to listen to in order to make up for it.. lol
I also want to mention that I listen to "Join the Dots" very regularly, and even though it's not an album, per se, I love a lot of those songs that are on there!

What an A1 story!
Wish is (probably) my fave too. I discovered The Cure back in 1990 when Mixed Up came out. I really like the juxtaposition of the "dance" music with what was quite obviously NOT originally dance music. Robert's voice struck a chord and stuck in my heart (ears?).
Whilst I loved Never Enough SO. DAMNED. MUCH. I found the remix of Close to Me to be a curious thing and liked it well enough, but there was more to love.
Therefore as time quickly passed, the first album that came out when when I was a fan was Wish, so for me, Wish is MY album. It was my first with the anticipation, with the discovery of something new and fresh that wasn't old hat for other Cure fans, something that we all could fall in love with together, albeit some could do so with the benefit of so many previous albums to look at Wish differently, but still, together.
I too remember hearing Open for the first time, and just being blown away by how rough, raw, live and just amazing it was/is. Though I now think From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea is a better song, I prefer Open. It is me, and I am Open. It resonates in a way FtEotDGS doesn't, though i can listen to FtEotDGS over and over for hours on end (and I HAVE done this).
OK, I'll shut up now, check your PM box in a few minis.
Enjoy the trip!
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!

Oh man, you're gonna be branded a witch and a heretic for liking WMS....... hahahahha kidding. though I'm still amazed at how much people here dislike it. it's polarising!
I found that The Top is a difficult listen for a lot of people but you find the hidden brilliance in it if you listen hard to the tracks. I don't mean that the goodness is buried, what I mean is because of the unique nature of the sound and song structure and composition, it's harder to appreciate for a lot of folk, than say The Head on the Door. I'd suggest keeping it in rotation and give it some time. It's gold.
Piggy in the Mirror - listen to the keys that play in 0:25 to0:30 how they dance along the ivories. Same with the ones 0:49 to 1:11, the rhythm they play! wowowo. Plus the way RS sings the words, listen the wild melody! - the nylon string guitar solo!
Dressing Up. - Go put on the version from Paris, that's what cemented that for me. Just a deep and layered beautiful song.. -Again with the insane vocal melody and notes dancing around!
The Empty World - The little drummer boy drums, the bassline that repeats that note that anchors it.. - The stark vocals telling the story. This song really picks up a weird vibe and runs with it!
Bananafishbones - Listen to the synthbassline from 0:27 how it bounces bow, bowwww, boooowwwwww... - You can't really hear it so pronounced in the album version but in later versions the guitar at 1:30ish.. Live it rips and you can really hear the constrained fervor in the album version.
The Top - the bassline that rhythmically kills me.. Oh man...
Or, not. Whatever you like!

Thanks for your reply. Interesting that the Web led you first to Wish, rather than Disintegration, for example, which I think is generally more celebrated.
Coincidentally, I started listening to The Cure in 1992, although not from Wish itself. I was 15 and I came across a few of my older brother's tapes: one had "Faith" on side A and The Top on side B. Side A also had the songs which are on Boys Don't Cry but not on Three Imaginary Boys (so quite a concoction of a tape!).
Another was "Concert The Cure Live" from 1984.
A little bit later I found a third tape containing 3 Imaginary Boys.
Those tapes is where it all started for me. I was quickly hooked and started getting their whole discography, including their latest, which was Wish.
So Wish holds a special place in my heart too.
For me there are 6 albums that constitute their best (in chronological order, as I cannot really rank them):
- Seventeen Seconds - Faith - Pornography - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - Disintegration - Wish
Then there's a second tier with The Head On the Door, The Top and 3 Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry.
After that, Bloodflowers.
Then Wild Mood Wings (so inconsistent, but with a good few fantastic songs such as Want, Treasure, Bare and the b-side It Used to be me).
Then the last two, which are the only ones I don't really like, save a few songs here and there.
