Part III
On the run up to xmas, crowds flock to That London to see the lights in Oxford street & huddle round the Selfridge’s window display to keep warm & maybe pop down to Trafalgar Square to see how bad the tree is this year. Such is the “joy” that pours out of people as they diligently ignore each other & barge each other out of the way along That London’s historic shopping streets (because modern That Londoners don’t look where they’re walking) that even the badly poured That London Guinness won’t break their spirits.
Over in Walford, however, the old ways are respected as true That Londoners turn the doom & gloom all the way up to 11.
The ancient traditions of people dropping dead, festive family arguments with more people dropping dead, revelations, in front of the entire family, that you’ve been at it with your fiancé’s dad, & the occasional murder are kept alive and well in the famous Albert Square where the macabre celebrations manifest without fail as the locals ensure this time of year is kept as miserable as humanly possible.
& if you show even a hint of glee around this time of year in the East end, chances are your cards will be marked by the purists (unless you’re Shrimpy, without whom, the market traders would have no-one to mind their stalls when they pop into the Vic to get bevvied up or have a fight) & you’ll have an unpleasant surprise waiting just around the corner. And there’s seemingly nothing that local super-sleuth & legendary violin-playing pipe-smoker Sherlock Holmes can do about it while Phil keeps guard against the rozzers all while also trying to protect Sharon's spray tan smuggling operation.
This year the misery begins earlier than usual as they’re re-burying Dot who, having died way back in spring, needed to be dug up for a proper knees up muvver Brown Cockney send off to ring in the season of clifftop death plunges, drownings & Lola's impending demise.
So there are some pretty stark comparisons between culture in modern That London & ancient That London. But, would you Adam & Eve it? That London’s wiki page doesn’t mention any of this. It’s a bit pony really. What a right old two & eight.
Heeding the warnings laid out above, maccatori , hellboy , snoopy , bloodflowers78 , cdm22 , wilgy , lolb , carlfandango , olivier , godwina , yassoo , madbobrjs , renny , gongoro73 , shane , paulwUK & pillowman will be moping into town this evening after a slap up fish & chips meal & a few pints of E.S.B. & we’re all hoping you have an amazing time.
I might mix up the colours even more today because why the heck not?
The Cure onstage at 8:15pm local (rumours of a 15 minute longer show today)
