There’s a lot to take in about That London & it’s historical importance, so I’m breaking this into 3 instalments over the final 3 shows.
“Cor blimey guv’nor, like an’ all. It’s proper rum do & no mistakin’.” & “Up them apples & pears to ‘ave a tinkle on the ol’ Joanna”. would be just the sort of thing you’d here on the streets of That London in the 19th century.
Nowadays these phrases have been replaced by, “‘Ow much for a pint?” & “You’re ‘avin’ a giraffe!” As the behemoth of a city’s culture has been eroded by an influx of bankers, wine bars & over priced coffee shops where nobody can spell Alan.
That London is a city made from a series of squares. Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Parliament Square, &, famous nightingale hang-out, Berkeley Square. Some of these are so famous that they have tube stations named after them.
But perhaps the most famous of all the squares is none other than Albert Square in E20 in the borough of Walford. Visited by ~4million people every weeknight (except Wednesdays…unless the footy’s on), the residents still preserve the 19th century way of life & strive to promote the Cockney ethic that is sadly disappearing from this historic metropolis.
Led by arch Cockney & avid tea-drinker, Mick Carter, the locals gather at the Queen Vic pub to learn the language of the old world.
Mick took over the Vic (that rhymes) from local wide boy Alfie Moon after the traditional Cockney bantz took a dive following the demise of dodgy car dealer Frank Butcher who will be best remembered for his twirly bow-tie.
In an effort to restore traditions, follicly challenged grease monkey & chicken shop owner, Phil Mitchell, sold the rub a dub dub to Mick for a bag of sand at xmas time in 2013 & so East end culture underwent substantial restoration. Or did it?
More to follow in the next thrilling instalment of That London…
Having left you with a cliff hanger, let’s see who’s arriving on the hail this evening.
