I have to admit though - I've been taping shows thinking 'oh god, the sound is bad...' - and I get home, listen to the tape, and it sounds amazing - just tells me how messed up my ears at the actual shows!

Drum bass was ridiculously high. Also too much overall sub bass.
drum bass and bass is exactly what f*cks my ears when I'm close. As a rule though - 10 meters back and things sound A LOT BETTER and not as distorted. Even at those crappy arenas. It's always a dilemma: do I get a perfect visual or do I want a nice listening experience? I am facing this dilemma right now - I have 4 shows of The Smile coming up this week! They did not specify what the camera/gear was here - did they?

Saw The Smile this summer in an open air venue, close to the stage, and sounded perfect.
