We stay in Italy with a short drive back up North to Padova or Padua as it’s known locally….. & on Time & Date.com where we get the countdown clock from.
Trojan prince Antenor is said to have founded the city shortly after the fall of Troy in the 2004 film. He’d run off there to hide after betraying the Trojans in return for being put into witness protection. But he made a massive faux pas on social media when he begged the Trojans to give Helen back to her husband thus revealing his location. Shortly afterwards he vanished, presumably whacked by the Padovanian mafia.
Padua gained fame well before TV & cinemas became popular when it took a starring role in Bill Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew. It was the scene of many a dialogue between fellow Paduanians Luciento, Tranio, Bianca &, of course, the shrew, Katherina. This cemented its place on the world stage. Although old Bill’s grasp of geography was a bit shaky as he placed Padua in Lombardy when it is actually in Veneto.
This confused Franco Zeffirelli so much that he ended up filming his version, starring Liz Taylor & Richard Burton, in Rome. Which was completely wrong. Don’t even get me started on 10 Things I Hate About You which was in a totally different country. What was Gil Jungar thinking of? It took the production company 13 years to realise before cancelling the follow up.
Musically Padua is a very important place. Bands were struggling to be innovative with their sounds. Restricted to the traditional drums, bass, guitar combination with the occasional addition of saxophone to keep it fresh. But many felt there was something missing. Especially for the guy sat on the little stool with nothing in front of him who typically had nothing to do save play the tambourine in the encores at shows. This all changed when Bartolomeo Cristofori delivered what would change the face of music completely. The piano. Finally there was something to stop Jools Holland from talking all the time & a safe place for Liberace’s candelabra.
Walking into this hotspot of fame & pianos today will be fabio71 , ohfuchsia & spiralcure who are certain to enjoy a plate of Galileo’s favourite Gran bollito alla Padovana & a glass of Itala Pilsen and let’s hope they have a magical time this evening.
We’re going red & white again today.
