I have 2 headphones, Akg q701 in my main pc and Motörhead Bomber hooked to old android phone that serves as a portable (bootleg) player. I'm still looking for better headphones for the portable and I'm open to suggestions. I only paid 5 euros for the motörhead phönes back in the day and for that money they are incredible bargain. But they are not exactly hifi. There's something lacking which I can't quite describe. For the portable music player the phones I'm looking for should have high sensitivity. External headphone amplifier is out of the question and the output from honor play phone which is not very loud (but is great quality) must suffice. Also they'd have to be as compact and lightweight and comfortable as possible. I might consider bluetooth too.
I can see the listening experience depends on the source. On the honor play the Bomber sounds hugely better than the Akg and on my Pc it's vice versa, and the bomber are pretty useless at PC use in comparison. It would be nice to have headphones that sound good in both sources. Otherwise I'm quite satisfied with the Akg pair. I tried a basic external Dac/headphone amp (Beresford something) for those and didn't spot any diffence with the high quality line out on my Pc motherboard, so I haven't purchased headphone amp.
Internet is full of audio sites and forums of course, but I thought asking here to discuss all things headphones.

Just get some Apple Earpods, your ears are probably shot by now anyway and you can't hear any of those top and bottom end frequencies - all you hear is that screaming tinnitus and you regret all those loud concerts and overly loud band rehearsals that at the time were SO MUCH FUN!! Oh wait, that's me, not you.
But seriously, I like full over-ear Sennheiser phones at around the $100-$150 mark, they sound pretty damn good to me, though I do actually spend most of my days listening to boots thru Apple Earpods as I use them to chat on Teams all day at work and can't be arsed changing headphones when a call comes in while I'm listening to bootlegs.
I've got a mate who paid well over $400 for some brand that is like being in the studio. They have these little soft reverse funnel things that poke into your earhole and just sound like nothing I've ever heard before. I'll find out the name and come back to you.

I definitely lost some high frequencies at a Motörhead concert in 2006.
I'm considering Sennheiser HD599 SE which is at my price point when discounted, a bit above 100 eur. I'll add apple airpods/earpods to consideration. If I go that road maybe I'll be converted from windows/android and soon have all apple gear.

I went with the portable-oriented Sennheiser HD569 and while I'm still in the psychological burn-in process I'm noticing some nice aspects in their up-close sound. Not wide soundstage since these are closed-back but no sound leakage either which is a good thing. Paris l'olympia 82 sounds so good I'm taking longer listening session than intended. Time to retire the Bomber I think although they also hold well with some of the less polished bootlegs. There's plenty of volume headroom also with the hd569 since they have high sensitivity. My phone drives them to the max and beyond with no issues. The earpads breathe well too and feel comfortable despite the isolation.

The q701 are great but of course power hungry and doesn't work well at all with mobile phones. I have to add K550 to consideration, although I have many headphones already - I got a too good offer for a refurbished Sennheiser HD599 SE to pass, only 60 euros. All three headphones, q701, hd569 and hd599 sound very different to each other but the q701 is best by a hair in pc use. Nice to have a variety of choice. And the hd569 rock in mobile use. Perhaps k550 would be closer to the Akg sound I'm partial to and good all around. If I got that then the hd599 SE would have to go, three headphones is more than enough.

The K550 are closed back and leak virtually no sound, brilliant soundstage - they sound open backed, they now come with detachable cable.
I also have a DAP and a few DAC's, my current favourite DAC is the THX ONYX, the DAP is an Onkyo and plays everything, DSD, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, PCM etc etc etc
The Akg sound is analytical. With q701 you can spot distortions, errors and faults like background noise in recordings that you can't spot with for example the sennheiser 5xx series. That's why some people who develop mp3 or lossy encoders use the q701. Once you get used to the akg sound that throws details to the front there's no going back. But the "lack" of bass and the sort of roughness turns many people off.

I Randomly clicked on this thread not looking for new headphones, BUT I am currently trialling a pair of these badboys, sound is incredible but need to work out if they feel comfortable enough for the price. Been a long time since ive properly used overhead's so will be an interesting 2-3 weeks HAHAHA

My mate reckons the inner-ear "probe" is fine after a short period of time, and other HPs then feel and sound weird hahah..
