A review of sorts - The Cure Wish - Deluxe Edition - Disc 3
Not much to say on Disc 3 other than I like the "Lost Wishes" opening four tracks. I also really like track 05 "A Wendy Band". The song never really moved to first rate status.
RS says in the liner notes that their inspiration for Wish was more a continuating of band collaboration from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, not Disintegration. As he said in Bloodflowers, "The Fire is Almost Out".
The Doing the Unstuck extended 12-inch mix didn't say anything new. I enjoyed the various closing tracks which I've already heard on my CD singles (High Higher Mix, Open Fix Mix, Friday I'm in Love strangelove mix, and A Letter to Elise blue mix). The closing track of a live End is good for people that don't, ahem, partake of audience recordings.
It's a strong deluxe edition. I'm glad RS put most of his effort into reworking Disc 1. It's like a breath of fresh air!
My local record store guy always comes through. He didn't have anymore copies in stock (this time i was a little late but i was not going out on black Friday madness even for a precious Cure album) but he said"I know where to get one" same price. Came fast and with a lovely note from the shop. I included the address in case anyone in the USA wishes (see what i did there haha) to order from them. Came packaged beautifully and in mint condition.

Hmmmmmm… so I listened to CD1 today, on my good headphones…. Aside from more prominent bass, I’m not hearing all this extra, or better, clearer mixed stuff you are talking about. I’ve listened to Wish the most of all of their albums so I know it very well, like Porls little quick muted strikes in the early section of Open, and I can’t say it’s a mind blowing experience for me.. which is a bit of a shame..
Overall it sound “brighter”, like it’s “cleaner” maybe? I’ll do an A/B in a DAW soon, maybe tonight, and switch between versions… maybe I’ll hear a difference..
CDs 2 & 3 in the coming days…
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!
Still waiting for mine… this pre-order thing supposedly for people who cares extra about a band… what a scam. If only I would have knew this, I would have ordered it from Amabezon. Cheaper and much faster.
steve, are the songs frog fish, dark affair, T-7, different versions on Music For Dreams than from Live House demos? Do you have any idea of the month/year when could we date Music For Dreams? And the Studio Tracks (1990)? (maybe november? Live House too already?)
I've been devoting a lot of inordinate time thinking about Wendy Time. I think I've figured out what I like about this song.
I resolved to listen to this song fresh with the deluxe edition remaster. I am not an audiophile nor do I have a musician's ear. But I tried to listen around Robert Smith's vocals to what was going on in the background.
The band really tried to make Wendy Time work. They pulled out all the stops, there are strings, little vocal noises and sound effects, guitar flourishes. And they still failed. After 3 decades, I finally figured out why.
This song would be perfect as an instrumental break in the album playlist. It's the fifth track, between From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea and Doing the Unstuck. Imagine if Wendy Time was just a mysterious instrumental, a lull in the pop tracks. We'd have to guess why it's called that. Maybe it could have been called Teddy Time for all I care.
I wish the deluxe edition had a studio mix of this song, but with Robert's vocals removed. You could leave in the "do-do do-do-do" rhyming he's doing in the background. A callback to The Perfect Girl? But no vocals. Finally, I think Wendy Time would work. As an instrumental showing off the talents of the band. Because Wendy Time never worked.

I like Wendy Time as it is, even if I think it's the weakest track on Wish. I do think the earlier version as it appears on Play Out was probably nicer.
I get why it was chosen instead of better songs like The Big Hand or This Twilight Garden: Bob wanted some balance between upbeat and downbeat.
