It’s not exclusive to the cure. Happens in TOOL and Faith No More as well. Have heard of it in many other trading circles too. Radiohead is one too.
Pretty much any band that has people taping has a rare swap only crowd. Bottom line is that the taper's wishes are respected. That's just simple courtesy really
See, I have had a totally different experience. Maybe it was the bands I grew up with but the ethos was that we were all lucky to have these shows and the tapers were revered but they weren't considered the gatekeepers of the music and holding back tapes to use as currency was very very frowned upon. I get that people here have accepted this as normal and "just how it goes" but I'm just saying that it isn't like this everywhere. Personally I think it sucks.

It may suck, but if the taper wants to use it to trade for something they don't have, then so be it. That's not gatekeeping though. That's trading. It's a lot less like that these days, but given the almost instantaneous appearances of various recording on evilbay etc, it's starting to be more common place. However, while also getting back on topic, this practice is more common with shows that feature first airings of certain songs, special guests, & rarely played songs. There was nothing terribly special about the 27/11 date, which makes it quite strange that it is still to surface.
I've been trading tapes and collecting bootlegs since 1991 and from my experience so far, the "RARE SWOP ONLY" phenomenon is exclusive to the Cure community.
Back in the day, whenever I would get a rare tape of anything, my immediate reaction was to seed it and even in the nascent days of the internet before the web had pictures, I was using it to do "Blanks & Postage" offers and seed the heck out of it because the idea was to make sure that as many people as possible could also share in the joy so this practice is anathema to me
Haha, try prising old Sisters recordings into the open. Or Radiohead. Or even Blur.
Sisters collectors for sure, I know a few who would rather take their rarities to the grave than see them enter general circulation. The obsessive nature of the collector.

steve I believe this show has the most tracks of any of the Reflections shows. In fact, from it you can make your own "Reflections on a Beach" - but that's about it..
Maybe also because it's the last show of that unique tour?
Oh well, here's hoping...
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!

Agreed. It may fully suck, but this is their right. I guess it comes down to general sense of entitlement that's been around since Adam was a boy. I'll give you a real world example that's aligned to this, though not exactly the same, though it does cross over to this later on.
I know a guy who's HUGE into Jane's Addiction. I'm not talking just having bootlegs and trading etc, this guy BUYS all sorts of things. From studio reels of original recording sessions to old instruments. He followed the band around and would magically smuggle in hand-held camcorders to tape gigs in the dark ages.. He had invested literally tens of thousands of dollars into his obsession. He has two rooms full of Jane's "stuff".
So at some stage, he managed to pay THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS for some original demos of one of the albums, and it got out in the community that he had these demos. IMMEDIATELY he was being asked for copies, and when he refused to JUST HAND OUT COPIES OF STUFF HE PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR he was called a hoarder, selfish, and then a litany of words that will end up as asterisks here on this forum. Why? Because he, who put time and a LOT of money into getting something rare, wouldn't just give it away to lazy people who want want want want want, and would do LITERALLY NOTHING to compensate him, or do not tape and share themselves... They want because "well why shouldn't I have the thing you paid money for?" Even though they do nothing to get stuff out there, and just ask, ask, ask.
That sort of attitude disgusts me.
The same goes for this guy's recordings. He goes to considerable expense to tape these shows, both audio and video, he risks being thrown out of shows, risks possibly getting in trouble and then people have the gall to call him an elitist because he uses these recordings that he made to trade for other rare stuff for a band he loves and works hard to get recordings for.
I'd dearly love for someone to explain to me, why he should just freely give out copies of stuff he worked hard for, especially when he's one of the very few people willing to go to that level of extreme-fandom to get the goods. Take into account that one person just freely distributing stuff does not immediately remove or negate the RARSWOPONLY crowd.
I'll wait.
The bottom line is if you want to get your hands on rare stuff, you need to play that game. Go tape, hoard it, and reach out to the RARSWOPONLY crowd and join them. Sad, but true.

People who just want and want and even complain (!) should try doing the whole process, i.e. the ordeal of getting the equipment, slip it past security, get it ready in the toilet or in the dark always keeping the wits about, enjoy the concert a bit less for the sake of the recording, take it home and so on...
Yes, some might do this gladly and receive all the earned appreciation and others might just want to keep the shows to themselves. Both stands should be respected.
