Real sorry, I'm no techno head... no printer..they drove me halfway to asylum before I quit trying with em, and so no scanner..not that I'd scan this anyway, its an uncirculated Mojo 2005 about to be posted.
Back page is Michael Dempsey ' hello/goodbye' The hello bit has 'We messed around with inapprotoriate singers until Robert decided he could do no worse'...Imagine having one of the greatest voices since Ozzy's mid seventies duende intestine wring and auditioning normals haha..
I'll write his goodbye in abbreviated full here:
'We were touring intensively thoughout 78 and 79 and supporting the Banshees. The tour had started dramatically with their guitarist and drummer walking out. Robert was invited to play guitar. We would travel separately, Robert in an air conditioned tour bus, Lol and me in the Austin Maxi with our chain smoking Wolves supporting sound engineer. I thought it was Roberts way of distancing himself from The Cure and moving to the Banshees. You've got a lot of time for brooding on the A1 with the conversation dominated by Andy Gray's debut goal against Everton.
I must have appeared increasingly sullen and uninterested to Lol and Robert, to their credit they tolerated this. I learnt later that Robert had become very disilussioned with the Cure's sound. We'd been playing with the likes of Joy Division, the Banshees and Wire all of whom had a very dark sound. Robert wanted to introduce that kind of power to The Cure. Robert was pulling away from melodic songwriting and I was drawn instinctively towards it. The Associates seemed a better place for me.
The leaving ceremony was by phone - Robert called me up and announced that he didn't want to continue. He presented it more as him leaving me rather than me leaving. He even offered me the name which shows how disilussioned he'd become with The Cure. I wasn't particularly surprised or outraged. It seemed as inevitable as our forming'
Been finding some great stuff working the mags. just wanted to share this one. This is new history for me. Robert almost handing over the name. The Cure not realising they had one of the greatest voices Western music will ever know....
