Hiya, How ya doin'?
I believe I understand english pretty well, but, in songs, with the poetic use of language and singing vocal tunes, sometimes I don't understand.
I easily understand the poetry of 'if only tonight we could sleep' or the blackness of 'one hundred years', sometimes it's harder.
On the other hand, until one day I read an explanation, for several years i had not realize that 'fascination street' was about some oral sexual practice. For me it was a metaphore, just symbolic, but I didn't think there was a particular point, i thought it was more a general feeling. If i had to translate the 'it' of the lyrics, I would have said it was 'words', or 'feelings', or... 'communication'? i don't know... I knew it was about a relationship, but it was the perfect example where the lyrics were poeticaly juste sympbolic, immaterial, vague, blurry, messy, and one didn't have to look for a specific meaning. Do you see what I mean? It's like 'catch me if i fall, i'm loosing hold', you have to take it rather symbolically than realistically.
Was it an evidence when you first heard it?
I remember reading on this forum (or was it TCCC?) he/she didn't understand the line 'slips a dress like a flag to the floor, hands in the sky surrenders it all', though to me it was rather obvious.
So I was wondering if you pay attention to the lyrics, if that is really realy really important?
That said, here I'd like also to speak of the time when you are not really paying attention to the words, you know, sit yourself on the sofa and read the lyrics in the booklet.
I rather mean when you hear a tune on the radio. Usually pop songs are said to be just easy and silly.
When you hear about boys don't cry (brilliant pop song lyrics, isn't it?) or the lovecats (a song about cats!), do you pay attention to the lyrics? Do you say to yourself the 'bdc' lyrics are brilliant or the 'lovecats' lyrics are just funny, or do you just let yourself be enveloped by the sweet general tunes of the songs?
I'll take two other examples:
Imagine we're good friends, I'm making you a personnal compilation of my fave tunes (don't comment my taste!), and I include The Apartments 'all his stupid friends'
and The Lemonheads 'alison's starting to happen',
will you feel like i'm telling you "I think you're stupid and I fancy your girlfriend Alison." ?
Personnaly I like The Lemonheads song 'stove', i think it's just a sweet tune and the lyrics are simply funny (funny writing story)
How do you react to such poppy tunes on the radio?
Do you listen to songs in non-english language which you don't understand?
Ta.
