I really like Reeves' playing in the general sense, and I've read, or listened to an interview or two with him and he's very knowledgeable about geetar, and from everything I've seen he is a super nice bloke...
I really like a lot of what he does and what he brings to the live versions of the songs overall, BUT some songs I think he goes too off-script. For instance, when playing Never Enough, he doesn't play the signature wah-wah lick. You know the one I mean. THE ONE that makes it that song.
Yeah he can shred, and yeah, he can be subtle when it's required, he can rock, he can roll, and he can play all the bits of songs like they're supposed to be played (except I noted in Last Dance, he seems to play a standard repeating melody, and misses some of the notes that change as the melody goes along (compare the live versions to the record and you'll hear it)), but overall he's there and he's excellent....
Some things though should not be changed or ad-libbed. Mind you, in saying that he's not the only one who played Never Enough like that, I remember during 4Tour Pearl wouldn't play the main riff, rather just a hack of it, and of the rhythm as Robert didn't play the guitar in a lot of the versions, like the one I saw live in 2007.
In saying all that, I'm sure he has Robert's blessing to play the songs in the way he's playing them otherwise there'd be dust-ups!
If you have a lead on Brisbane 21 August 1992 - CT version, for the love of Bob, let me know. Please!

I think we all have favorite iterations of songs and favorite line ups. Something resonates with us for whatever reason and we have strong preferences. And I believe there's definitely an emotional component to our love for specific versions and definitely to music, in general. So by that token when a version deviates from what we really love, we notice and it doesn't sit well.
Do you mean he actually "leaves out" notes in Last Dance, or are the notes getting swallowed? I think I can imagine what you're talking about. (I'll try not to be lazy and go have a listen). Whatever is happening, it's a choice he's making for whatever reason and one that he and RS feel comfortable with, like you said.
With favorites, part of the fun is looking forward to quirky nuances you just don't hear in any other version. It gets into your cells. So yeah, deviation can feel disappointing.

Yeah I mean he leaves notes out. Instead of playing the more “complex” melody that has changing notes at the end of each bar, he plays a simpler, more generic version of the sequence of notes over and over. It’s quite noticeable.
Also there’s no flanger on his guitar for that part, just distortion, and you can really hear the missing flanger.

Just watched LD from Malahide Castle (ah, my heart with the many seconds just showing RS catching his breath and smiling at the crowd coyly).
I can see why the missing trills and notes to the melody strike you. I don't dig it, either.
ETA: I agree it would be much nicer sounding with RS playing what's missing.
