Have to go with In Between Days, The Exploding Boy, A Few Hours After This… (FICSX 22) if only on the strength of “A Few Hours After This…” being one of my all-time favorite B-sides! It soars somewhere between the luxuriant goth of Faith’s “The Funeral Party” and the pop sensibilities of Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me’s “Just Like Heaven”.
The honest-to-goodness, number one, main reason I bought Join the Dots was to finally have “A Few Hours After This...” on CD. And, frankly, it was worth every penny. I remember bringing the set home and immediately popping disc one in the stereo, queuing up the song, cranking up the volume, settling into the couch, pressing play, and closing my eyes. My wife flew downstairs as soon as the first chest-thrumming note hit, wanting to know why the house was shaking. I didn’t have a great answer for her; I could only explain that I had never heard this song so crisp and clear and needed the moment.
In the liner notes for Join the Dots, Robert refers to “A Few Hours After This...” as “a slightly deranged experiment, an attempt to do something orchestral and quirky,” and that’s exactly how it unfolds. The music is majestic, all swirling strings and bold percussion, and mixing it with idiosyncratic love song lyrics and a splash of humor multiplies its richness.
For me, “A Few Hours After This…” is a B-side that ranks up there with "She's Always In My Hair" by Prince and "Get Down Make Love" by NIN, simply brilliant b-sides that could’ve been (or maybe deserved to be) A-sides.
Too late to edit the poll or I'd add IBD 12" - I tried to only pick one per album. A lot of tough calls..
No idea what my answer is yet!
I miss the A Forest 12" on the list. I know, I know... It can't be considered "extended"... but yet... Another Journey by Train deserved to be on the list.
Lovesong, Too Late, and Fear of Ghosts. There are others I might like more but that one is the only one I ever held in my grubby little hands, so it's the only one I feel an attachment to. WQFS Greensboro 90.9 FM ("your only alternative") used to have a copy I played on my show.
