Ok. Having lived with this for a while, I have to say the Beck collab is as close to vintage, peak Beck as we’ve heard in a long time. Not to take away from Colors or Hyperspace, but this just feels more like The Information or Mutations or even Odelay! Sooooo good!
Kind of like how Aries feels like something right off of New Order’s Low-Life, Gorillaz have a knack for bringing out the best in the artists they collaborate with, without it feeling derivative.
Not really the Gorillaz but close enough! Went to a Damon new album event in Kingston last night and he was on the best form I've seen him for years. Happy, relaxed and really chatty in between songs. Was supposed to be a 45min album launch party thing with an 8pm and 10pm show. The 8pm went off as normal, we skipped that and went to the 10pm show. Saw a setlist before the show and said "he'll never fit that into 45 mins". His curfew time came, they flashed the house lights but none of the (very young!) record shop staff were brave enough to tell him "time's up" and the roadies just laughed at them. Meanwhile, Damon & band just kept playing and ended up over-running by another 40 mins.
Oh yeah, gig was packed out and we were almost late but talked ourselves to the side of stage with the crew. All gigs should be like this
The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows The Cormorant Royal Morning Blue Lonely Press Play Go Back The Tower of Montevideo The Poison Tree Hong Kong Daft Wader Out of Time El Mañana Darkness to Light On Melancholy Hill Polaris Particles This Is a Low Beetlebum
New album is pretty low key but Polaris is an absolute banger live.
