Tough day. No energy, went back to bed for a couple of hours but felt like I had "restless legs" because I haven't gone out today. Getting ready to go out now by myself for a night time walk. I do worry a little more about walking alone at night since nobody is out, but I am going to wear huge boots. I want to listen to TC while walking, but I won't so I don't have headphones in and make myself a target.
I ran an errand to the drugstore I don't usually go to yesterday and it took me across the street from the closest hospital. Outside the emergency entrance I saw the biggest, whitest Thermo King refrigerated truck I've ever seen. Temporary morgue. That thing has to be able to hold at least 60 bodies. That really drove things home.

end of the year? I think every parent who home-schools their kids should get a teaching diploma after this. & a medal.
Well, now it appears there is infighting between the governor and the mayor. The governor is saying the major doesn't have the authority to do that. I'm sure he's right. Will someone just let us know the plan so we can have a clear answer?
And I acknowledge I shouldn't be upset about this because we have it better than most and I can't imagine what the hell single parents, those living paycheck-to-pacycheck, those with multiple kids, etc. will do if schools don't reopen. My being upset has to do with 1) our son having virtually no social contact with kids for so long and 2) the fact I can't stand not being employed right now and this will certainly complicate getting back to work...

I think what I would do, & this is just me thinking out loud, is to get in touch with the parents of your son's friends. See if they have strengths in certain subjects. Then maybe agree a time table where you can get them video conferencing (zoom perhaps?) lessons taken by each parent (parent x:Maths, parent y: English, parent z: History etc.). That way it gives all of you a bit of a break occasionally plus he gets to actually see his friends at least. I'm sure it's more complicated than it sounds, but maybe worth a try.

Great idea, steve. I've been wondering about something like this. We do have daily lesson plans from his teacher (as required) and in our house, we're doing 100% of the daily work. I take it many are not doing much at all.
But there has been virtually no actual online instruction other than one FaceTime call with his teacher. His casual online meetings with friends have devolved into sort of weird, parallel play with the kids just running around the house and not really interacting at all, largely dead screen time. So something more structured like what you are suggesting is key, I think.
Since I'm out of work indefinitely and have teaching licensure I do have to say I wonder if I can leverage parental desperation for those who can afford it by somehow being enterprising...

Good luck if you can somehow make it happen. Happy to think out loud again if you get stuck Fingers crossed

Do you mean the end of the school year? They've done that here also. Barring a turn for the worse the plan is for school to start again in September. I know they've been doing online classes but that's something of a disaster. In the public schools a sizable percentage don't have home computers or internet access. Maybe if they took some of the taxpayer money they're throwing at charter schools, they could provide computers, etc to those in need. I know Microsoft & some of the other tech companies are trying to fill the gap with equipment but its not enough.
