And Duran Duran was never a band for screaming girls, but that's what they ended up with their clientele. Same with Goths showing up to Cure concerts and buying their products.
I enjoy listening to Duran Duran's first album, it's all about adventure and intrigue. It could have been a soundtrack to a James Bond film. Which they ended up doing as well.
Yesterday a cute cashier at the grocery store named Blue (hippie parents haha) saw my Disintegration hoodie & got all excited. Said it brought out the old goth in her. This may warrant further investigation....
So just curious what percentage of Goth music does a band have to play before they are considered a Goth band? 100%? 90%? 75%? Curious. Not that I think they are (they aren't) but we can't deny a LOT of their songs are Goth. Even Friday I'm in Love is kind of Goth. Let's face it the only day he's happy is Friday. Or do we just go by what the band says they are (which in The Cure's case is "we cannot be labeled")
To be honest I don't know goth of the origin personally the only thing I can identify is in middle school friends and high school friends, it was wearing dark and heavy clothing, painted black nails and such, pardon me if I'm defiling but these were my best friends, my home away from home. they were my go to friends but I never dressed like that, I've never seen robert with black nails and I eventually learned about shoe gazing. To me the cure had dark moments and songs but there's a beautiful bright color behind! I probably don't know what the heck I'm talking about but to me the cure is far from goth

More recently I would have said it was the other way around.
Pardon if I offend anyone, but this is from my point of view, I was born in 1987 and it's all I know
I don't think you did. This debate has raged for yonks. It's almost like the "Han shot first" argument. The Cure are not really like anything else & so pigeon-holing them as one genre is always going to lead to considered opinion that can go in many directions. I've said it many times though. They are not a goth band, but they sure as heck dabbled in that scene & that scene embraced them as such. Just as the mainstream scene embraced them when they began churning out more accessible records. There was a slight brush with metal on the self titled & let's not forget Three Imaginary Boys was a post punk/new wave effort that could hardly be categorised as goth. The Kiss, The Snakepit, & Like Cockatoos are more psychedelia than anything else & I suppose there is a more than healthy dose of dream pop spanning their entire back catalogue. Speaking as an old school trad goth (not one of those glow-stick waving posers) I very much asserted that The Cure fitted into my personal circumstance at an early age & still today i assert that is the case. I think that many fans have "grown up" with the band in all or many of its various genre hats &, regardless of what they do, we all still have a soft spot for them & perhaps stick a personal label on them. Look at the discussions about setlists. The discussions about new material. The discussions in the live threads. It's easy to see who prefers what side of The Cure & even easier to see who leans more toward the goth end of the spectrum. But one thing's for sure. Everybody still enjoys the stuff that doesn't necessarily sit right with them & I think it's because it's just impossible to define any sort of genre & so it becomes that much more unique to people.
*NOTE: This is of course my personal take on the matter. Your mileage my vary*

Steve this is good! The cure hits everyone at heart and home where they are in time and when and what it means to them, such an amazing band that can make people feel the way they do, like they are themselves lost in time and how to identify so much beauty and being lost behind it all is something one person just can't explain in their entirety, they amaze me and I live to know they amaze many other people too!
Yeah right Bob , you've convinced us all. So 'Dark Trilogy': Seventeen Seconds-FAiTH-PORNOGRAPHY. And then just came "The Cats". Well about the Friday song all i have to say is that 9 out of ten people out there love Friday best than any other particular day of the week does that means we live in a Goth world or what? If you ask me we are talking of the best pop song ever released (sorry The Beatles) well tomorrow i might have changed my mind and say the same for 'Just Like Heaven' or even 'Close To Me' but that is another thing and THE CURE are the best band , no matter the line-up.RS is a genious, this band isn't goth or pop but they are mainly a category of their own. I'd say they are the one which describes best the words 'Alternative Music'. You want 'goth' ? they 'll do it,you 'd prefer pop? they have it as well and so goes on. That is why i like them more than anything else i've ever listened to.
At work they play a lot of cool songs, of course Friday I'm in love but I get tickled pink every time! I'm a hyper adult and I just can't help when I hear I get extra excited! Always take a big bite! Such a wonderful surprise hehe!
