I don't get why he rejects being a goth icon. He didn't stop wearing black or abandoned his big hair and makeup.
Because he isn't a goth. He's never been, he's never identified himself with a goth subculture. And he's always talked about it... Clothes, hair and make-up on the stage don't make him a goth. It's as simple as this.
