Welcome to the world’s northernmost metro area that hosted the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest, Helsinki.
It’s widely thought to have been named after the famous vampire hunter with the coolest coat ever before he secured the sponsorship deal with Vans. In the local slang , the city is often called Stadi which comes from the Swedish word for “city”. Inspired indeed.
The “daughter of the baltic” became the capital after the Russians booted out the Swedes & Alexander I wanted to bring it closer to St Petersburg. Obviously, moving the previous capital Turku was a logistical nightmare that even DHL refused to take on, so Helsinki came out on top & even the downtown was rebuilt in the same style as St Petersburg so the Russians wouldn’t feel too homesick. It even starred (playing East Berlin) in George Clooney’s 2002 directing debut, Confessions Of Dangerous Mind.
But we wouldn’t know anything about the city at all if it wasn’t for notorious glam punk icon & eyeliner pioneer Michael Monroe whose band, Hanoi Rocks embarked on a 102 date tour to make sure the word on everyone’s lips was “Helsinki”. Bloke down the pub still has his All Those Wasted Years tape in his walkman. But not the one with the spelling mistake on it. However, after Razzle’s death, people began to forget the once great city that spawned classics such as “Beer & Cigarette” & “Love’s An Injection” until along came a guy who was so fed up with flaky Microsoft operating systems bricking his PC that he wrote his own kernel & chose a cute penguin as its mascot. Linus Torvalds’ open source code became a thing of legend & still today forms a core part of the operating system in most mobile phones in the world. So next time you hit that like button on your android device’s farcebook app, remember, a Helsinkian made that possible.
& that brings us to this evening’s event. The Cure will bring their own energy to the former energy production centre of Suvilahti & it’s possible that Gita will be going (we think). & having enjoyed a plate of lihapullat muusilla ja puolukkahillolla washed down with copious amounts of Olvi we hope she has a splendid time at the show.
The festival poster is fairly uninspiring as far as colours go, so we might try the boat with the levitating crown thing from the city flag.
