I recently watched 12 Years A Slave & would recommend that you all ignore the hype. A distinctly average film at best. How it won best picture is beyond me.
Don't get me wrong. It's not a bad film, but it's nothing to write home about either.
If you like horror movies check out the descent. One of my favorites.
I took a look, based on this recommendation, during the Christmas holidays. It made me think of all the cave movies I have stumbled upon lately. It looks like The Descent gave a lot of writers and directors inspiration, because there is a lot out there right now.
The Descent was entertaining for sure. I hadn't heard anything about it so didn't know what to expect. As I watched, it definitely falls in the horror category!
Out of the three other cave movies that I have seen recently, I enjoyed Beneath (2013) the most. It is about a group of coal miners who go into the mine for a normal work day but bring down a miner's daughter for "one last dig before retirement," so you know things don't go as planned.
I also enjoyed As Above, So Below, which takes place in the Paris Catacombs. Who can resist? The story was not as solid, but it kept me watching ... and cringing.
James Cameron's Sanctum was also a couple hours well spent. Cave divers feature in this one, so the death defiance of, uh, spelunking, is ratcheted up a few notches. It's funny what you pick up when you watch a bunch of underground horror movies.
Bonus: And, while not officially a cave movie, Black Sea can be placed in this category as well. It's about some desperadoes who hire an old submarine to try to find some Nazi lost riches. (If I recall correctly.) Very entertaining, and lots of claustrophobia for those needing that fix.
I watched this at the weekend & was completely blown away at just how good Emma Thompson was in it. I mean she's a darn good actor anyway, but she hits it out of the park with her portrayal of Pamela Travers.

saw the dead don’t die last thursday and loved it! if you are a fan of jarmusch and his dry humour, this is good fun. great cast of actors who all agreed to work for less than their usual pay just to be part of that zombie thing. story and effects nothing new for horror shocker experts, more of a hilarious spectacle set in an american small town. and yes, course zombie slaying tilda swinton was my favourite.. the ultimate cool and scottish kill bill reference
