Same here, I've never heard Elise live. I was at Nottingham Rock City 92 and although they played the majority of Wish, A Letter To Elise wouldn't be played.
Weird as it's obviously a classic Cure song that even got chosen as a single. I'm a big fan of the two extended versions of it.
But we did get the debut of Impossible Things, Forever and the hottest gig of the tour Trust was my one that got away, didn't see that until years after the Wish tour.
Dunno about insulting, but maybe they thought it was just a bit too clichéd to play it only in Portugal & Spain & only in those countries.
It just looks this time they have a closed set with very few variations and that's all. We'll see if August bring us some surprises, but it doesn't look like right now.

Very true, the live premiere of TWIT was beautiful. Wish had only been out about a week so it was on constant play to get into the songs, and TWIT is definitely a highlight of the album and possibly the closest thing to a title track.
It was a great setlist with Forever and a brill version of In Your House and Apart, but yes it was sooo hot in there, sweat dripping off everyone.
And no windy time

gongoro73, my dear left eye, a great writing and a great night. I'm very happy for you that you experienced such lovely events.
I just can't understand what Roger said. It seems like rubbish, with all due respect I have for him and for them. Not good enough?!... I think that they simply didn't take into consideration The Blood to put it in any set at all and didn't rehearsed it. The only explanation why they might not have been good enough. Or... maybe it was an expression of the respect they have for Spanish and Portuguese guitarists...
Anyway, happy for you that you had such a wonderful gig, Rafa
But I don't see And I don't feel But tightly hold up silently My hands before my fading eyes And in my eyes Your smile
I mistook stars reflected in a pond at night for those in the sky.
So... I managed to get a couple of backstage passes for the festival, because a friends of mine played the same day as The Cure. We reached the venue about 8pm, and went straight to the backstage to pick some drinks. My idea was then to look for fiveswinglive and wait with him 'til the show in the front rows, but when we were about to leave the backstage, I suddenly spotted Simon entering the dressing rooms. Humm…… I just couldn’t leave the area after that sight.
So we waited there, just to see If could say hello to any of them and give a humble ‘thank you’ for all these years of wonderful music.
We wandered around for a while, nervous. It was a clearly a Gallup-esque backstage as you can see:
Then, Roger appeared, relaxed, with some friends. I approached and told him that how thankful I am for their music, how, since I was fifteen, their music has been with me, like a soundtrack of my life. He was very friendly and polite. Then I asked if they were going to play The Blood and he said:
“No… We are embarrassed to play The Blood in this country, we are not good enough to do it”
It really surprised me… I told him that everybody was waiting for it (at least, everybody on TCC ) and he laughed saying “No, no…”
We chatted a little bit more and I left him with his friends.
I spotted Jason walking into the dressing rooms a bit later. No Reeves or Robert.
15 minutes before the show, we decided to go behind the main stage as our passes seemed to let us walk freely in that area. Or at least, nobody stopped us. We started to sneak in through several corridors, and suddenly, we were on the front pit, just below the stage, with all the photographers. I couldn’t believe it. And then… Plainsong, POY and High. Nobody seemed to notice us. But when the photographers left, we found ourselves alone there, with all the Security crew looking at us
I tried to convince the Security guy that Roger let us stay there (obviously a lie) and I even showed the picture with him. At first, he –surprisingly– swallowed it and said: “OK, but you stay seated against the fence, you can’t be on your feet, ok?”. Great!, No problem! Then he left, but five seconds after, turned back, came to me and said “Hey, wait a minute... Where is your AAA pass? how it is that he didn’t give you any pass to be here? When did he tell you you can be here? And who brought you here?” “C’mon, you gotta leave, you can’t stay here!”
I mumbled some final excuses but with no luck.
We watched the rest of the gig quite far, among the crowd. The highlight of the show for me was FTEOTDGS, I think it was a brilliant performance, with stellar vocals. I really missed One Hundred Years and Want, but you can’t have it all. It was kind of strange knowing wich song was going to be played one after the other, but I accepted it and enjoyed the show. I guess we are too spoiled with setlists…
After The Cure ended, I finally!!! met fiveswinglive, his lovely wife and the also lovely Gita.
The rest is history!
this is lovely to read! thanks for sharing and so happy for you 😊
And lovesong, forest, just like heaven, disintegration, lullaby, boys don't cry.
Always the same singles get played, a lot of their classic singles ignored...A Letter to Elise, Charlotte Sometimes, Catch, The Hanging Garden, Cut Here, Mint Car, Wrong Number, the 13th, Perfect Boy.
I've seen this line up play Charlotte Sometimes, Catch, Mint Car and, Wrong Number - I'm sure they've played more of those songs at other dates.
Ever since they became an arena band around '85 they have had to drop older stuff and big singles to play fairly static setlists on nearly every single tour - even their most successful tours like Prayer and Wish ignored 'classic' songs and were the same most nights.
The only reason these current songs are on the setlist is because these are the songs they want to play - no-one makes them pick any songs. I get the impression that the songs are being chosen because they suit this line-up and they like playing them. The setlist is still evolving, just slowly. Would you rather they went through the motions and played stuff they didn't enjoy for the sake of it?
Hello, curefriends! I'm back home from my cure travels & adventures. I can't believe I was actually there and met some other fans as well! I'll try to write about my experience and thoughts on shows over the week, but meanwhile I will leave you with this :
Have a nice evening/day!
